My approval of these glam and in-action shots is not measurable on a normal scale.

Please accept this as a placeholder until adjustments are made.

(Took my 91 out this weekend and she is now a dusty grrrl. No pics, though. They really are awesome bikes )

Just wondering what size tires everyone is running on their early's?I just took off my Knobbies which are a 4.60 and a 3.00 and reinstalled the Kenda 270's that came with the bike and now the bike is much slower to turn into curves and feels like it flops in,the Kendas are 5.10 and 3.25,which I feel like are too big for good handling. It's too bad they have plenty of tread,I'll try to burn them off asap I guess so I can try the smaller sizes. It's pretty damn stupid my bike turned better with full knobbies

BTW,Very tempted to spring for TKC's to see how they'll wear on the street...plus ability to run some easy trails with a bit more confidence than 50/50 tires.

Was wondering about going with a bigger rear tire myself. Got 4.60 x 17 Kenda's on now, gonna need a new one soon.

Here's a few from yesterday. No cool action shots 'cause I was riding alone.

And I suck.

Noice!

as for tires, I'm hoping that Shinko does bring their 705s to the US after all: Motorcycle SUperstore just vapourised the 705 link they'd been sporting, so I'm more than a little worried.

510 on the rear of my 91 and a 3.00 front IIRC, though right now I'm running a Shinko cruiser tire up there (and it works suprisingly well on dirt roads here

Would you say your DR turns into corners naturally and smoothly?I don't know if the issue with mine is due to the large front tire or the back one,I actually suspect the front the most,I was just trying to decide if I should order one tire or two.
I've owned and ridden many bikes over the years(been riding for 40 years) and the only bikes that turned in like the big DR always corrected with a change of tires, but it seems like I've always changed them both due to some other reason and been surprised when it corrected the wonky handling that I thought was natural for the model I was riding.
The knobbys that I took off were bargain basement Cheng Shin Metzeler copy C755's,actually cheap enough to just replace every 2000 miles or so and not be too upset about it($25 front and $38 rear)I may also try the C858's they're about as cheap and are are actual dualsport tires(I'll pump 'em up hard to resist chunking)

...and speaking of cruiser tires, when My Bonne Black is due for new shoes I'm going with the Kenda K761 Dual Sport tires,I never crowd the limits of traction on the street and I think the K761 tread will look freakin' retro as hell on the Bonneville, plus it'll give me some extra security if I stray off of paved roads

Ballistic Ken,I don't believe my Bloomfield is quite as scenic as yours...

I run the 270 in the 5.10...3.25 sizes without any trouble.

Hmmm, you know,it's nothing I can't adjust too, rode it with the large Kenda 270's last year, just noticed the change in handling when I swapped back on the 50/50 tires from this winter's knobbys.

So many variables here! Tire pressure, fork height....(asplode)

In the dark ages I used to run small street bikes with Way Too Big Tires in the futile search for better traction and better profiles. Once upon a time I had a similar situation to what you're describing; I could definitely tell that I had a bigger tire than required up front because of the way the bike stood-up-then-dropped into corners. Didn't like it. Went back to a less sexy but more correctly sized front.

YMMV, but for the DRs/ enduros in general my pref is still in the 2.75/300 range for the front and no bigger than 5.10 on the rear. Tire selection has been good. Handling has been neutral.

As for the cruiser skin up front, no complaints: roads out here are hardpacked enough with a good consistentcy of embedded grit that I've only been scared a coupla times. That said, ravenranger hasn't introed me to her Deep Sand Of Doom section yet, so stay tuned.
