Burn 'n Wet

As if my summer has not been full enough I find myself getting to polish it off with Burning Man and WetFest.

A two week distraction at the beginning of a lifetime ... so be it.

I'm off.

A Butt Warmer

The Ms. sees me off with some cinnamon rolls and a cup of coffee.

It's about 8 am as I get on the bike to head out of Bozeman.

It's about 780 miles to Lovelock NV where I'll spend the night.

Yeah, I'm fine with some helmet time.

Next picture, a gas station in Dillon, MT.

Here's another. No idea where.

Hey look! A desert.

Cadillac Inn (one of my favorite places), Lovelock Nevada. 9pm.

Nice FJR.

Line to the Playa

"What's Burning Man," you ask?

An experiment in a gift economy?
World's largest 'no impact' environmental event?
A post-modern social art experience?
The yearly epic party for Californians?
Or just the world's loudest campground?

I'm about to find out as I descend with 40,000+ people on the Black Rock desert.

Twenty miles east of Reno at Fernley, I head north on 447 into the bright sunlight.

It was a lovely day for a ride through the high desert. Pyramid lake was blue and cool. The radar detector cheerfully chirpped on and on. I did manage to pass a number of convoys lead by a multi-color Vanagon with a tarp-flapping trailor.

And then I hit a line ... about 1 mile short of Empire. (About 16 miles out from my eventual campsite.)

Fortunately, it freed up at Empire, and I was feet up until I joined the line for gas at the Shell Station in Girlach.

Once full, I ride the 8 miles of tarmack north toward Black Rock City,
the name of the temporary city created by the event. Here's what it looks like from the air.

From the ground on the way in it's mostly dust in the wind.

And then I was there.

Well, at the sign. the next 3 hours was 8 lanes of dust going 5 miles per hour for the first mile or so ...

... and then in 100 yard spurts for the last couple of miles for two hours or so.

Once I did get moving again at the ticket and check-in area I didn't waste time with pix ... sorry.

Final arrival at camp was about 3pm.

Tomorrow will be a look at one of the strangest shows on earth.

I'm sure the slow drive in was worth it.
Wanted to go this year but had too much work going on.
Hope you got some wild pics.

Oh, Burning Man delivers, mate. For example, within the first 30 minutes of arriving a drunk chick stumble into us, mumbled a few words, and passed out for the next four hours.

This is 3:30 pm on a Monday mind you.

As the afternoon latened it became clear we were in for a little rain.
I quickly set up my tent and stashed my gear, and retired to our camp's community tent to meet folks and wait out the rain.
Once past, I went out in the late afternoon rays to shoot some hippies and desert sky.

I really couldn't wait to see the big art instalations out on the playa in the daylight tomorrow.

Who me? I'm just lookin' to dump pix, mang. "Letting myself out" will have to wait til I get home.
Yeah, I'm on the road as I write this one. Way to many stories to tell about this summer,
so I figured I'd start a thread so I can get the pix out quick 'cuz the Birning Man pix are cool,
and I'll be way to busy when I get home to post 'em up.

But, since you ask, here's the self-referential shit:
