Leslie Gulch, Three Forks and The Steans

From my home in Donald I rode up to my cousin's place in Odell, near Hood River. This ride really started from there. From Odell i headed south through Dufer,Tygh Valley, Maupin, Shaniko to Antelope. Found some twisty pavement between Shaniko and Antelope.

From Antelope I took a gravel road to Mitchell.

A couple of views of the John Day river.

That took Longer than I expected. so from Mitchell I went straight to Vale on HWY 26. It started sprinkling on me in Mitchell and continued all the way to Vale, so i arrived cold, but not really wet,and found a room for the night. Next morning was overcast but a little warmer. I headed south to Leslie Gulch. The road to Leslie Gulch goes through the Succor Creek Canyon.

And now Leslie Gulch.

A water crossing

From Leslie Gulch it was down to Jordan Valley to fill the tanks just in case. then off to Three Forks. about half way down there is the Owyhee Canyon overlook.

Looking right (north)

Looking left (south)

and straight ahead

Going down to Three Forks

a shot of the far side

At the bottom if you go right you come to this.

The campground facilities.

And the views

Going left brings you to this bridge over the north fork.

And then this ford of the middle fork. It's more of a creek than a river.

The road continues on.

I didn't. They had told me back at Jordan Valley that the road got greasy when wet. It was threatening rain, and I don't like greasy. So i headed back. Back on the pavement i had to decide where next. Find a camping spot between here and the Steans, or head for Burns and a room. I dislike breaking a wet camp, so opted for Burns and a room.

Next morning heading out it's 60 degrees and overcast. Part way down to the Steans, something doesn't feel right. Seems like the front end has to much grip. Found a good spot to pull off and check, sure enough the front tire is flat

The top of the Steans was in the clouds, so I knew it was going to be foggy up there, and cold. Looks like there is still some snow hanging around.

At the top it was windy, spitting snow, and 40 degrees, but felt much colder.

Took a couple shots on the way down.

i was hoping that when I got down off the mountain I would get back out of the weather, but no such luck. By the time I got back to burns I decided to call it a day.

Morning brought more blue skies than clouds. I have all day, and HWY 20 to Bend is really just 130 miles of boredom. Maybe i should check out that road going north to Paulina. Turns out it is a nice curvy, paved mountain road with no traffic.

Oops the pavement ended. Oh Well.

It hints at a view.

Then a little farther it's there.

Back to the pavement.

Paulina

From here it was Prineville, Redmond, Sisters, Salem and home.

Nice work! Thanks for posting your trip.
You stopped just a mile or two of the most beautiful hot (warm) springs when you passed three forks, across the bridge, and on the two track road.

Looks like the Steens are in full fall mode already!

Awesome report! Loved the pictures. I saw your auxiliary tank on the back. Is it plumbed into the fuel system?
