Does it count if I'm planning a ride through Sweden?

Was talking to some friends in NYC last week and the idea popped into my head that for next summer's ride (this summer my wife and I are riding from LA to Banff and back) we could fly to Sweden, rent or buy bikes, ride up to the north end, grab the coastal ferry, and ferry and ride back along the Norway coast.

On paper, it makes enough sense to consider.

Anyone want to add some reality to the idea?

The plan is to drive straight east from the border crossing in Salla till I get on the M-18 to Murmansk. I plan to spend (the only) night in Russia on this hotel http://www.russlandia.ru/ in Murmansk and check out the Russian nightlife.

I can drive around 400km on one fill up, do you still think that I should be worried about gas stations?
Hi Jochen. It looks like a very cool trip. Wish I could tag along this year .

Hej Jochen,
Are there any other takers for this Murmansk trip? If we are going to get this off the ground we will need to start planning now, especially for the paperwork and visas etc.

I will send you a PM with my private mail and telephone number. Would also be great to meet you for a spin somewhere on the high coast (Höga Kusten) over the coming weeks.

Murmansk Trip 2011

Hej Jochen,
Your route looks good to me. I will try to find roads maps for that part of Russia and get an idea of road quality etc..

It look like a 2 day trip each way to me. I also looked at the possibility of doing a trip directly to Nordkapp and from there on the Norway E69, Norway E6 and then Sweden E75 and back onto the Norway E6 at Hesseng and cross the border there. That would mean a 5 - 6 day return trip I guess and cover about 4000kms.

Do you want to tent it as much as possible? I have no preference if we tent or use hotels, I'm easy.

I don't know exactly how many days I can take yet but it will be at least 4, there is a 50-50 chance that I can make a full 6 day trip and will know in the next couple of weeks.

I will fire off an email to the suggested hotel and get confirmation of the visa process. I just want to make sure that what they suggest matches the recommendation of the Russian embassy here in Sweden

Hi Red

I like to tent if the weather is nice and I find a nice place to put it up but I'm sure I want to sleep in a real bed some of the nights. As long as it doesn't cost too much it's fine by me.

I guess we only have to sleep one night in Russia. Let me know what the hotel says about the visa process.

You can find maps here http://maps.yandex.ru/ it's like a Russian version of google maps.

I have read that the road between Salla (Finland) and Kandalaksja is in good condition and the highway m18 up to Murmansk is a straight and rather boring road. The Road from Murmansk to Kirkenes is also supposed to be good and here we have no choice cause if we pick another road we will get arrested by the MP because of all the military activity in the area.

oki,
The email to the Russian hotel bounced! I will try to ring them in the morning. As regards being arrested...... sounds like a good idea to avoid that. Don't fancy sharing a cell with 'Bubbaski' in Russia.

I arrive back to Ö'vik kl 23.30 tomorrow night so wil ring you tomorrow to make plans for the ride on Sat. Around Härnosand is a good area for me and also som nice roads and scenery.

Talk tomorrow

I am a BMW rider from Torshälla who lives in Linköping now. I'm mainly a sport-touring rider, but I seem to end up on gravel roads and "skogsmaskinspår" from time to time no matter what bike I use, my R1100S can handle allot thou, so it's not a problem if I take it slow.

I would recommend to ride through Norway instead of taking the ferry (if it is hurtigruten you had in mind), the riding is too good to miss. If you are not in a hurry, take the costal road RV17 (I think), I have heard it is really nice pretty much all the way. It does take time thou, lots of curves and small ferries. When you get down to vestlandet (the western part) there are great roads everywhere.

Sweden can be boring if you choose the big roads, but it doesn't have to be. Stay on the small roads and try to plan your route diagonally to the big roads that way you should find many small curvy roads, both tarmac and gravel. If you follow the blue signs you usually end up somewhere too even if the road looks like it might end in the woods. If you happen to be in a hurry somewhere you can always choose to take a bigger road to save time.

Hope that helps and that you will have a great time in this part of the world!

Just south of Sweden, huh? :) I suppose you mean Gothenburg. I live in central GBG and usually ride on gravel during the weekends, you should join me and my friend for a ride sometime! Maybe taking that XR600 for a spin?
