Dakar Dazed - countdown to bankruptcy!

Just had an email from a friend of mine Stuart, who followed the Dakar this year and took some great photos - here are just a few:

Jenny, (sorry if you've already covered this before). How did the crash happen? Were there pretty big rutts/tracks out in that open area? Did the back end come around at high speed and you got crossed-up?

What earbuds did you use with your ipod on the dakar? I mean, those bikes are loud.

Sometime later this month, but they've not said yet... hopefully around the 20th, but it might be a week or so later...

I use Skull Candy Ink'd - I've tried a number of different buds, and found those off the best frequency range (certainly for the price!), particularly at the lower end which is where a lot of bud type earphones are weak... for info, the Ink'd have 11mm drivers, or so they say...

Anyway, best of all, the are not silly money and are comfortably enough to work well as earplugs too...

Hi John - If you look back a few pages (quite a few pages) you'll see some pictures, but basically it happened at around km 96 on the 4th stage - I'd just crossed a dry lake (chott) and was staying wide to stay out of the dust from other riders, and the soft sand on the piste that was cut up by then...

Unfortunately, at a track junction, a grader had pushed a new road across the desert, so rather than the mounds either side being typically a foot high (which would have been fine), the banks either side were more like three foot high...

I saw them at the last minute, and hit the first one pretty fast (40-50 mph), made it over but was completely out of shape by then and slammed into the second bank on the far side of the grade road, which is where (I'm pretty sure) I broke my leg in the impact... it was one of those "I'm not going to get away with this one" moments, and I basically shut my eyes... miraculously the bike made it over that second bank, and I finally fell off about 30 yards on... close to the piste itself as you can see from the photo:



This shot was taken by a helicopter as Carlos Sainz came buy... although it looks like I'm alone, as you can see, my bike is back up on it's stand (to make it more visible) and there was another rider who'd stopped to help, plus the film cameraman on the ground helping to slow the traffic... the cars were still doing about 80mph when the passed mind you!

I believe she was running stock but is thinking about upgrading now.

Hi Nitro - The kit for the YZF is also from JVO... I was chatting to Jorge in the bivouac and he explained that he developed the prototype for the YZF kit on a WR initially, and actually liked it so much that they are producing the same kit for the WR too, as I guess the YZF is still an unknown quantity in rally racing (heat issues in Maroc I believe), and of course Olivier broke his wrist in Dakar this year...

It makes sense to produce the new shape kit for the WR too, as that bike is still a current model, with no confirmation of a new version (EFi, reverse cylinder etc) any time soon...
