Hi Pat,

We talked a bit about your crash and your mending at the NH-SCREW rally. I hadn't realized that it happened so far from home.

James Bay sounds like a good place for Urals!

Glad you're doing okay.

Thanks Alan! Hope all is well with you! It would be a great Ural ride for sure. Actually, a small group from the Canadien Ural group (CURDS) did the trip about 2 weeks before me.

Day 3 – We tackle the Rte Du Nord, North Road

Today we tackle the North Road. It is a remote 406 km gravel road that runs from just North of Chibougamau to the 275 km of the James Bay road. Our plan is to get up by Nemiscau and stop for the night. Nemiscau is a Cree Village 10km north of the road at the 299km mark. There is a Service area at the 290km point with fuel and food.

We got up, packed up the bikes and checked out. Here are the intrepid adventure riders!

Just a couple doors down was a gas station and a McDonalds. We filled up the bikes and then headed back to McDonalds. We grabbed a couple breakfast sandwiches for breakfast and some hot coffee. With us and the bikes full, we hit the road at 8:45am. It was about 12 miles up the road from town when we reached the North Road.

Here is the sign... North Road is up ahead on the left....

Jim taking a photo of the sign....

Starting down the road, notice the sky and the puddles.. It has rained and it will again!

Following are several shots along the roadway.....

Jim & the KLR..

Some of the truck traffic... There was more traffic than we expected but it seemed to be mostly locals (fishing?) or construction workers.

Here is one of the road "improvement" projects. Not a fun ride!!

This is one of many small hunting and fishing camps, many of which likely belonged to the Cree.

This is one of the signs usually indicating a camp was nearby

The intrepid Adventure Riders stop for a photo OP

As you can see, the weather has not improved. We encountered light rains off and on. The good part was it kept the dust down.

Yours Truly..... cruise’n the Rte Du Nord!

These guys behind had a problem, they lost the complete wheel off the trailer and were trying to find it. The hub and axle were buried in the rut they dug.

Pulling into the rest area at km 132...

We hung out here for a while as the rains started to get quite heavy...

It was about 11:30 when we arrived here. This was our rest and lunch stop. Grabbed some fluids and a couple snack bars. The rains started right after we arrived so we stayed under cover for about a half hour and as it eased up we got ready to roll again. As I mentioned, the dust level was low because of the rain. It was intermittent throughout the morning and as you can see, it was not a bright sunny one! Road conditions varied considerably; there were sections of loose gravel, a couple construction areas and some wet areas. A few of the wet sections were slippery like clay where it was hard packed.

Next up is Day 3 Part 2!
This will take us up to the Rupert River, the Village of Nemiscau and our camp spot for the night

Day 3 - Part 2

Day 3 - Continued....

Ok, we left off at our snack and rest break down to km 132. We head back out on to the North Road, looking for the Rupert River at 238 km mark and the Village of Nemiscau at the 299 mark. Throughout the North Road are many lake and river access roads so the more time you can spend on this road, the more exploring that you will be able to do. I recommend that if you travel this road, that you use the Detailed Travel Guide http://www.jamesbayroad.com/nr/nrguide.html to know what is off some of the access roads you cross.

As you can see, the road has considerably more water after the downpour while we were at the rest area.

It was also very dark and overcast and visibility was not the greatest...

As you can see, we were in and out of the rain.

This is just one of several, but it was the first. As we are riding along, we could smell burnt wood. It seemed like miles and then we came upon a section of forest that was decimated by fire.

I do not know if these were accidental forest fires or controlled burns. A couple just looked to be too massive.

Some stretches of road were oh so very straight!

And others were twisty....

Yours truly at a photo stop....

Jim Gordon along side ....

It was about 2pm when we pulled in to the Rupert River rest area. a couple things regarding the Rupert. In 2009 they diverted the river upstream from here. It was much more impressive in the past. I was still impressed with what I saw. The river is even bigger downstream where it crosses the James Bay Road. We will see that around day 6.

Information Board at the River Walkway...

Here are some shots of the river itself.....

Here is Jim returning from walking along the river.. the above shots were from him

Back at the bikes, ready to hit the road....

on the road again... heading for fuel dinner and campsite

It was only about 60 km from Rupert to the turn off for the village of Nemiscau. We passed the service area at 290 and decided to go on to the village and get gas and dinner. We preferred to spend our money with the native people rather than an industry for the construction and and power plant workers. Right as we entered the village was the gas station. We pulled in and gassed up. Talked to a few of the locals who were looking at the bikes and curious where we came from and where we were headed. We asked about food and the restaurant was closed. So we decided to backtrack to the service area and grab dinner. We were there at approx 4:00pm. It was 91 km to the next rest area which was further than we planned to travel but figured that it would be a better place to camp than searching on the side of the road.

We arrived at the camp area at approx 6:00pm. It was looking like rain.

As we were setting up, the bugs were terrible!

So ends Day 3. It was a good riding day, tough at times but good and we enjoyed it. The bikes performed well over the various surfaces and we had a good time on the North Road even with the rain.
Now its time to get some sleep....

Next up Day 4 – James Bay Road to Radisson

Day 3 Stats
Total Time 8h 49m
Moving Time 6h 10m
Total Miles 274
Moving Ave 42 mph
OA Ave 29 mph
Max Speed 66

Excellent!!! I completed the TLH a few weeks ago and as I read your report I have that old familiar feeling of a new adventure on my horizon. Thanks for taking the time and effort to post this (my first piece of research), and glad to hear the crash did not break your adventure spirit.
