Vegas to Kolob Reservoir: Fifty miles of bliss

Disclaimer: This is my first ride report. I didn’t go around the world, down to Baja, or even offroad for that matter. This will mainly be a pic filled report. I hope you all enjoy the RR!

The Megamoto

So yeah. Miles of slabbing on the I-15 to find 50 miles of bliss. A little background about myself… I own a BMW HP2 Megamoto. I love it. Its about the most fun a guy can have without taking his clothes off (as far as Im concerned). Also, after reading “Frank Likes to Ride” as well as the “Darth Peach Rides Again” ride reports, I figured Id give it a try-taking pics while on the move! I can tell you now, it’s a lot harder than I originally thought. I have quite a few pics looking straight down at my handlebars!!!

DOH!!!

So a couple days ago, while surfing the net, I read about this road that goes up the “back side” of Zion National Park. Hmmm… Sounds interesting. So I look it up on Google Maps and I like what I see. A lot of curves for about 25 miles. At the “top”, at the reservoir, the asphalt ends. In other words, where 95% of you would continue on, that’s where my journey ends. Yeah, theres times I would like to have a GSA or DR650 or something like that. But on the other hand, theres nothing like a good, twisty road.

Time to get started…

I woke up nice and early to get started. Ultimately, there really isn’t much to show from my trip out of Las Vegas up to St George. Its just a long, boring slab of nothingness for about 120 miles. Once I got to St George, I turned off on Hiway 9 and headed up to the small town of Virgin. Once arrived, take a left on Kolob Reservoir Road. Greatness begins there.
I rode up to the “top” to see the condition of the road. I just wanted to be sure that there wasn’t too much loose gravel and such on the corners.

Coming down from the reservoir

Im not sure what the elevation is here, but the temp was perfect. About 70 degrees.

Cruising along. I didn’t go flat out like I did on the way up. But I still had a blast coming back down.

What was rather interesting about this road was that I went through a bristlecone pine (I think) forest, a birch tree forest, fields of gold, and desert sage, all within the 25 mile ribbon of road (that also changed colors).

WEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

Twisty-Turny

This road winds through some pretty scenery.

Looking the other way…

Just a little farther down the road and the scenery changes again. Utah is as beautiful for the road-only riders as it is for the dual sport guys.

Nice shots there. I've taken some on the road shots, but I'm usually too focused to take pics in the turns. If I had turns like that around, I'd be way too giddy to even think about the camera.

I hear ya on the roads, but I'd have to have at least two bikes if I lived out there.

About the longest straight stretch on the entire road…

Pic from the cockpit.

Utah. Land of Awesomeness.

The road has everything from sweepers, to 180 degree switchbacks. (I didn’t get a pic of those. I was too concentrated on speed and control. LOL!!!)

More sweepers!

Keep them coming!

Even though there isn’t much to look at here, I really like this pic.

HA! I didn’t realize that I got “evidence” of the 180 turn.

Looks like a fire swept through this area a few years ago.

This part of the road was up on a ridge. Theres a part of this road that’s only about 20 feet wide and it drops off at least a couple hundred feet on each side. Kind of intimidating…

Getting’ skinny!

Coming down off of the “spine”.

Riding back into civilization. Time to put the camera away and get ready for the ride back to Vegas.

On the way back, temps raised up to about 105 degrees, which is normal for around here. Luckily, there wasn’t much wind today (which isn’t normal), so I didn’t get too beat up on the ride back. I ended up getting off of the I-15 in Overton because I was so bored. I rode North Shore Route at Lake Mead National Park. I forgot to take the camera out during that run, because I was just having way too much fun (knee sliding fun…).

So theres my first day-ride report. More RR will be coming soon.

Edit: The camera is a Samsung $120 point and shoot. I have no idea which model or anything. I picked it up while I was in the "desert".

Love that area, hate the cop sitting at the bottom of the hill with his speed trap!
