Umm, because we're all supposed to be part of the Adv Family and want to know what's happened, if anything? If it's no big deal then why post it up?

"Tiggs has hung up his Adv helmet for the last time!" Some may say, what's this about? Most would say, "Who gives a shit?!"

Jdeks departed because...

Pity, Jdeks is one of the good guys, but even then ran afoul of some. Having to defend every word gets tiresome.

Just for the record, here are jdeks words on the subject

Except you did.

I did nothing more that share the shots I took, and you immediately felt the need to make a snide remark and bring up something from a thread you supposedly consider "now dead thank feck". I suspect largely because you're trying to rationalize away the annoying possibility that some jumped-up little young'n might actually have a good point, and you don't like the idea of conceding that...

I'm glad you said what you did, though. Because you've highlighted, amongst other things, something very important - exactly the sort of attitude I saw at the rally that has made me decide indeed not to take any more photos, write any more reports or generally 'Rally On', at the Alpine, or any other, and that advrider too is perhaps not for me.

I know you won't miss me. But I have better things to do with what I've got left than seek the approval of man as old as my father, who punctuates his sentences with smilies.

Jdeks screwed with this post 06-30-2014 at 01:30 PM

All "families" have tiffs, arguments, disagreements of various sorts amongst members... at times more frequently than at others. Every family has it's oddballs - the "uncle festers" of this world; you know - the weird ol' bastard that talks to himself at weddings, baptisms, funerals etc. It would seem that Oz ADV (ADV in general) has its fair share of these as well...?

In the mix is also an assortment of well travelled enthusiasts, opinionated pricks, long time riding mates, casual rally acquaintances, trail riding buffs, ATGANI fanatics, minimalist militants, good friends, a smattering of people you would not piss on, rally wannabes, accomplished legends, wallys, n00bs and pro's and a long list of true blue blooded DR devotees...

... oh, and XR owners.

The thing is... on ADVrider.com a lot of these interactions are purely vitual in their reality. On the web a persons true nature can be a metamorphosis... depending largely on what they write, how they write it... and more often than not the way it is pecieved by others.

Oft times it's easier to have an opinion and shoot down someone over the monitor, than if one was "face to face"... sometimes that "detatchment" also allows an individual to put forward an opinion they might otherwise not feel comfortable with... both of these scenarios occur in here regularly.

So whether you subscribe to the theory that "to have it out in person" or not; one thing that remains true through all of this is, often - people in person are perhaps NOT that which you percieved them to be over the internet.

jdeks "departed" of his own volition, for reasons that he is more than entitled to... I hope that with time, perhaps after meeting/riding with some of his likeminded adv mates, at some time he might choose to return and regail us with some of his great photo's, give us some packing tips or generally just hang... and when/if he does so, I am sure he will be welcomed... but in saying that I will point out that the is one self regulated courtesy that all and everyone here at ADV can avail themselves of - that applies both here AND in the real world;

You can CHOOSE who you associate with or not... No need to bait or troll, if you disagree with something - you can make your opinion heard - in a rational debate/discussion, or simply ignore the subject alltogether... but it does not have to degenerate to the level of a bitchy cyber fight.

Some would say that, that is what mods are for... to adjudicate on these matters? For mine...? yes and no. To an extent perhaps, but then I am reminded of something my grandfather said to me about conduct in public. If you imagine that someone was filming or recording your actions/opinions; would you be comfortable with them being displayed in public - where your family, freinds or authorities could identify it as you?

Anonymity is a good thing... but it does have an effect on the way some individuals interact... sometimes I find "grandads" rule helps me.

happy adventuring to all, and to jdeks - all the best, ride far, pack light and document it in fine style... one day when you are ready, we'll be happy to hear from you.

It amazes the shit out of me just how serious some people take things.
It's the internet FFS, not exactly the bastion of propriety and harmony.

Who really gives a toss who thinks what at the end of the day?

IMO Jdek had some very good points to make and some good tips.
But he took it all to seriously which was always going to end in tears.

So he's chucked his rattle out of the cot? Big deal.

That's the thing.

The most basic rule of survival on any interweb forum thing is:

Do not take yourself or anyone else seriously.

Trouble is Dave, that just gives people false expectations so often. I've lost count of the times I've derived pleasure at the thought Troy had stopped posting & gone away but then he thaws out & starts posting again.

Ahh well....

Turtles? I saw a turtle recently, swimming under the Karuah Bridge (the old one). The turtle was swimming, not me.
