Now for something completely different...

Just read this in the news...

"Officers say they found 300 ecstasy pills and around $22,000 in cash in the vehicle, and a further $3400 in cash concealed between one of the bikie's buttocks.
Both men were taken to Sutherland police station, where the 24-year-old bikie member was charged with supplying a prohibited drug, goods in custody and recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime."

In the space of 150 years, we have gone from eating no added sugar to more than a kilogram a week.

You would need to run 7km every day of your life just to not put on weight as a result of eating thatmuch sugar.

Two decades ago 1 in 14 adult Australians were obese; that figure is now 1 in 5.

The ‘natural’ sugar in one glass of unsweetened fruit juice per day for a year is enough to add just over 2.5kg your waistline.

The more sugar we eat, the more we want. Food manufacturers exploit our sugar addiction by lacing it through ‘non-sweet’ products, such as bread, sauces, soups and cereals. And now milk!
Even less than 150 years I'd say. Broadly speaking (I've read that book too ) around the turn of the century we ate chops and lambs fry for breakfast (and dinner etc), lots of fat, worked hard and were skinny. With world wars and women going off to work cereals, toast and juice became popular for breakfast and Sugar started to work it's way into the food chain. When you look back even further into human history there was no carbohydrate farming - carbs were hard to get and only around for the summer months - now we have them all year within easy reach and refined for our pleasure . .

Here's another interesting read Jack:

http://www.amazon.com/Lights-Out-Sle.../dp/0671038680

It's a repetitive punishing read but but well worth it. It contains a lot of topics but of interest here they say humans have lost the cyclic nature of our year. Long days of summer, available natural carbs and mating season for one half and faux hibernation (let's call it reduced activity) for the other half. They hypothesize that the availability of electric lighting has made it appear to be summer all year for humans and actually causes you to crave sugar (and maybe mating ) - unfortunately at the same time it became readily available.

I guess they play cause and effect with light as the cause and sugar craving as the effect. Sugar, type 2 diabetes, excess serotonin not being turned into melatonin by sleep (they say 9.5 hours a night - we get 7 or so because we think it's summer all year with the lighting) leading to depression and a bunch of other stuff. Very interesting reading...

I've also heard mention of a sleep study done in Antarctica over the dark Winter where they took away all the clocks and told the researchers working there to sleep whenever they wanted. After a month or so they mostly settled into 12 hours sleep a day and had a nap . .

Don't get me started on the food chain!! Here's a good example - everyone raves about eating fish for Omega 3 - did you ever wonder how humans survived without Omega 3 for so long? We didn't! Apparently in the 1960's chicken contained around 100 times the Omega 3 it does now and that is representative across the food chain. Who knew animals and humans were so similar - put them in a box with no exercise and terrible food and they are not healthy . .

Whether they are correct or you believe them, interesting ideas anyway . .

How do you come up with this stuff?

I reckon there's gonna be some stifled laughter in the courtroom...
