[QUOTE=Jaseun;21846435]My wife of 11 years is Australian. Her folks are getting up in years. She's been here in the us for 20 years now. We visit about every other year. We have a good life here and things are easy despite the current economy. But I'm more or less estranged from my family here. I love her entire family, her dad is the dad I wish I had, her mum's a little difficult but sweet. She's got two brothers that I have always felt very connected to.

We have a cat we adopted from the local shelter, she's great, she's our kid. The though of leaving her behind is just heart breaking. Yes we could take her but the process is not pleasant for a fragile cat. A dog maybe, cat not so much.

my gran was fond of the saying
"the lord makes many cats"
she'd often say it with one hand in a bucket

Well, I posted a serious response to the OP's question and it obviously crossed some invisible line, coz it's either been axed without so much as an explanation, or I pushed a wrong button and my deathless prose is now lying in state on the website of a Mongolian Bordello - where it probably won't be read coz A) almost no-one in Mongolia reads English and B) absolutely no-one in a Mongolian Bordello reads anything except by braille.

My point was that shifting countries permanently usually sets you back at least 5 years in terms of job seniority, investments, rungs on the property ownership ladder etc - and that's either if someone else pays to move your stuff, or you arrive with just a suitcase and a well-stocked wallet.
According to my missus, women can expect such a shift to "cost" about 5kg, apparently; we did it twice in three years...
Another point I made is that compared to the US, everything here is a lot more expensive: vehicles, food, fuel, houses - especially houses .
Rather than retyping it all again, I'm going to trawl Mongolian Bordello sites in case I can find the original: that's my excuse, anyway....

With respect I don't think this is anything we can help you with.
You seem well informed about Australia so good luck making your decision.

Odd - can't imagine what was contentious about those few comments - phantom censors maybe?
