Lame trip with report with no single track

Taking advantage of Labor Day weekend, I meet some friends up in Jackson Hole to check out the scene. I pull into Scooter’s house at 2:00am and jump into the back of my truck for some shut-eye. The next morning we pack up and head out of town, and catch views of the Tetons on the way to meet up with Billy Mays.

You do know who Billy Mays is right?

He likes to ride with us from time to time.

Anyways, since I’m not local to the area I hardly know where we went. But damn it was good! Particularly since we all ride Husabergs.

Soon we are in Idaho and Billy is leading the way.

The trails get better and better. And steep. For some reason Scooter decides to take pictures of me instead of the trail. Check out the ST going off to the right. Very tasty!

The going just keeps getting better…

We end up on the edge of the Snake River, but hundreds of feet up. Too tough stop for pictures. Eventually we have to stop anyways…

The good thing abour riding with Billy Mays is that he carries a saw. This tree had too much girth, but hacked the branches and built a ramp over it as best we could. After 45 minutes we give it a shot. Here is your’s truly…

Soon we are back down from the mountains and rally through the valley in top gear. The ruts are a bit sketchy at 80 mph.

Then we rode tons more ST but were too lazy to stop for pictures. Scooter decides to taste the dirt for no apparent reason.

We settle in for the night.

I decide to sleep in.

Scooter plans the route for today (or so we thought).

Billy Mays keeps a lookout for angry animals.

More to come...

More endless singletrack.

Scooter slides off the trail... again.

Billy Mays has a few battery problems and heads back to the nearest highway with Scooter’s assistance. I wait around for a while until Scooter meets back up with me and we continue on. We have vague directions of a hot spring that Billy gave us before we left.

We cross the river about 5 times and I get my feet wet all 5 times but manage to keep the bike up. Then we do about the craziest hill climb I’ve in a while (soon to be out done). We ride a trail straight up a mountain for about 2000’, ride more winding single track. Then we find it.

Scooter isn't shy.

The spring is super nice, warm. Almost too warm. We eat lunch and jump in again for the second time.

We pack up and head for yet another hot spring about 70 miles away.

We catch glimpses of a nearby forest fire on the way, but didn’t take any pictures.

Notice how the colors are already changing up here?

Then it begins to get super steep.

So, to make long story short. The trails go so steep that they that were all one-way. After miles and miles of one-way trails we end up getting stuck in the bottom of a steep valley with about 50 downed trees blocking the path. And about a 45° hill climb littered with logs. We are stuck.

We spend hours trying to retrace our steps but eventually resort to riding straight up and over mountains trying to meet up with a trail that actually shows up on our GPS.

We play “Pin it to win it” and crash often.

Again, pictures don’t do it justice on the steepness.

Scooter’s bike is actually upside down in this pictures, I’m holding on to mine so it doesn’t fall back down the hill.

During one of the attempts to rally the mountain, Scooter launches off a log and ends up with a nice hole in his engine case.

We open it up and discover that the rock caught one of the clutch springs while the engine was still running and broke it. See the spring sticking out? We took out that spring completely.

We make a hasty repair with JB Weld and hope for the best. Along with about 1 quart of oil that is now soaked into the ground, Scooter’s clutch is lame at best. This will be interesting.

At this point we still have to find our way out and onto a trail. With much cursing we find the “trail”.

Can’t see it? Try this…

So we ride our way out in the dark at last. Another long story short, we end up at another hot spring. We spent a well deserved 3 hours soaking until 3:00am. We are too lazy to pictures. My watch measured the water temp at 106°F… perfect.

I really need to stop being so lame and join you on one of these adventures. I'm making one more trip before the dreaded snow comes.
