we're not lost, we just don't know where we are

Shoein and I Met up with Dan at his place this afternoon.
His dog Lilly greeted us-

We then headed out and stopped for gas for my tiny tank while Dan plotted the course

Headed up to Lagrange to pick up the railroad bed, at which point the guys switched bikes so Dan could try out the DR650

He seemed to like it

Enjoyed the view

The original plan was to ride to Medway and stop at a picnic area off the trail, but apparently we missed it, so kept going. The trail was great, and soon we were riding beside a lake- couldn't get a good pic because of the trees, but Dan was starting to wonder if we had taken a wrong turn as no lake was on the original route. I pointed out that there were power lines, so therefore we could not be lost, we just did not know where we were We figured the trail had to come out somewhere so proceded on, soon the power lines ended. Dan eventually pulled over to consult the map & GPS and the guys tried to figure out whether to keep going or turn back as my tiny gas tank will only go so far..... I took some pics

while the guys debated

I found some treasure

The GPS was not indicating any connections with pavement if we proceded ahead, so the decision was made to turn around.... The guys switched bikes back.
Dan consulted the map again to decide on a route home

The road signs did not seem to be going in the correct directions and we heard some voices so headed down to get some directions back to Lagrange.
The lady told us the easiest way was to go back and take a left but that we would not want to go that way because the road was "trashed"- all torn up and rocky, and we would not want to take our bikes down that- he uncle had tried earlier today on his Harley and was only able to go 2 miles an hour and had to turn around
The trashed road:

alternated between this and a bit of rough pavement- we averaged 40-50mph.
Back to old town with a bit of fresh mud on the bikes

Even the Strom got a little, although the guys tried to avoid the muddy stuff with it as Stroms seem to like to nap in the mud Both guys did a great job though of riding it over the rough stuff

Overall a great day with plans to return and ride the rest of the way on the trail- turns out on consulting the atlas when we got home it does meet up with a major road, and it was only another 10-15 miles......

"Medford Road." It comes out at the sharp corner on 16 north of Lagrange.

The picnic area is at Medford, before you cross the railway trestle.

And had you continued up far enough, you come out on Rt. 11 between Brownville and Millinocket.

In the area bound by the Piscataquis river, Rt 11 and Rt 116, the Garmin maps, even their topo maps, are almost useless. The logging roads in that area seem to get used and abandoned and then re-furbished a lot. A few years ago you couldn't even get to Schoodic Lake that way, the beavers had huge sections of it underwater.

Good onya'll for getting out there, looks like it was fun.

yep, saw that on the map when we got home... unfortunately Dan did not think we would be going that far and did not have the correct map pages with him, and I did not bring my gazeteer like I usually do....
No Beaver Dams, and actually not too much mud or water on the trail-its been such a dry summer!
Definitely want to get together with you & LG sometime to explore more of the area!
