Verde Rim Loop - Cruel and Unusual Punishment

The long ride idea got shortened and the short ride idea got lengthened. And both got harder!

The players:

Oldtimertc - Yamaha WR450F
Refokus - KTM 450 EXC
Dillon_bernies - KTM 950 Adventure
Yardstick - KTM 950 Super Enduro

It was a day of cruel and unusual punishment on the big bikes. It was just plain punishment on the little bikes!

~6 a.m. and the sun hasn't even come up yet

It's a cool morning.

Cruising along.

The sun is starting to peek out.

Casting shadows.

That guy has a big ball of fire in the bed of his truck!

The nuts were out in force. This one just left the lane behind me (carpool) at this point. I hate when they wait until the last second to move into a different lane.

Want their license plate?

One last sunrise pic.

Dillon and I met at Cave Creek Coffee Company where he ordered the Cream Cheese with a side of bagel.

As we were drinking coffee my phone rang. Refokus called to let us know that Oldtimertc was making a speed run home to get riding pants.

We took a leisurely cruise over to the Wildcat staging area and waited for Oldtimertc to show up. In the meantime we offered $1 rides on the bike he left behind. No takers though.

With the dust on 7-Springs road we decided to spread out.

I took the lead at first and came across this in the road:

I would have got a closer picture, but that's a big rattler!

We all coalesced at the tee of 7-Springs & Bloody Basin. Dillon arrives first.

Then oldtimertc.

And refokus

All together again.

Oldtimertc took the lead on the next section of Bloody Basin Rd. He was concerned about not seeing much dust and stopped here.

The others were not far behind.

Hey Dillon, your light is off!

Don't ride off the edge!

We all met up again at the turn in the Great Western Trail that would take us to Dugas.

Here comes refokus!

Closer.

And there goes refokus!

We both missed that turn and had to turn around.

Refokus arrives at one of the gates along this section of the GWT.

Then Dillon.

Then oldtimertc.

The infamous downhill on the GWT doesn't seem so bad after the rest of this ride.

Dillon

Followed closely by oldtimertc

And he goes for the pass!

We're going to have to get refokus to stand up in this stuff!

All gathered in the shade at the bottom of the hill.

There has been a lot of water through that area. The water crossings have changed quite a bit!

Oldtimertc makes a splash!

Refokus tip-toes through.

And Dillon splits the difference.

Oldtimertc loves the water!

Shortly after the water crossings we hit Dugas Rd. This is more wide open, high speed gravel. Great fun!

At the end we joined up just before jumping on I-17 to go south to Cordes Junction.

Awesome sunride pics Yardstick ! Can't believe I forgot all my riding gear

As soon as I went to suit up I realized...wholly crap..no pants !! What a ROOKIE mistake. They were back home waiting to be cleaned after the Labor day massacre ride.

Brad's quick thinking had me heading home at 90 mph to get them...made it all the way home and back to wildcat in 40 minutes

Refokus had switched to reserve with the little 2.4 gallon tank on the 450. I made it to the gas station and as soon as I pulled up to the pump I saw this:

Hmm... 83.8 miles to the fuel light. 2.8XX gallons. ~30mpg. Yep, it's fun stuff on a big bike.

Lunch at the McDonalds across the street. One of these things is not like the other!

Then back up the freeway to Dugas Rd.

High speed, low drag (for now)

One of the last of the "easy" sections for a while.

Love that bike!

Refokus arrives

And Dillon

It soon got rocky. The "cruel and unusual stuff" for us on the big bikes.

And this isn't even the worst of it.

It goes on for miles and miles until you drop off the Verde Rim... where it gets worse and is all on steep downhills!

KTM parking.

A little beyond that cattle guard is the point of no return.

Once you go down this. There is NO turning back.

Turn the sound on for these, there are some good comments.

Oldtimertc with the stoppie, mid-hill.

Refokus. They're all shitty lines.

Dillon. The most impressive thing is, he is doing this with fork springs lighter than what I would run in a small bike.

Oldtimertc comes in on one of the smoother sections.

Some odd black and red bug I've never seen before.

This trail has seen a lot of water. I don't remember this field of bowling ball sized rocks from previous trips.

Dillon is picking his way through.

When suddenly...

Nooooo!

At least the crash bars did their job and they didn't even rip the tank open!

I've only been down this hill twice before. I kept thinking it got easier and less steep. Selective memory, I guess.

We took a wrong turn and found a fenced off grassy field tucked back in the hills with a bunch of people milling around. No idea what it is.

Once we had the right turn, a few more hills, up and down, and we were back into high-speed, low drag stuff to Bloody Basin and then 7-Springs.

At the 7-Springs Campground we found someone who had tried to turn around on the road with no brakes.

Oops!

At this point my low fuel light had been on for 9 miles and refokus had recently switched to reserve. Somehow I figured we'd both make it and I didn't take the gallon off the back of my bike to make sure.

Refokus ran out of fuel 3 miles from the Wildcat staging area.

Somehow the Super Enduro sipped every vapor from the fuel tank and when I got to a gas station I filled up the 3.5 gallon tank.

The GPS log shows 226 miles, but it shut down due to a low battery as I was coming home. I probably rode just over 250 miles for the day. Excellent ride! Next time we're including the Sheep Bridge and Horseshoe Dam!

The map of the day, not including the part of the freeway I had to ride to get there and back.

And the elevation profile.
