Buying a bike in Mexico

I was planing on flying from Seattle to Guadalajara, buying a small dual sport to putt around on for the winter and then selling when it was time to return. However now I hear that unless I have a resident visa I can't register it in Mexico. I also hear that it can be registered in some Mexican states ????? Anyone know for sure what the story is ?
