MEROST,

I'm not certain to which maps you are referring. The GPS on my dash is a Garmin 60CSx with US TOPO 2008. The maps of each days route I included in the RR were done with Google Maps using the method described in post 55 here.

The pics with the "Dave6253" watermark are from a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5. The other pics are from a Pentax K7 DSLR. I process the photos with Adobe Lightroom. I tend to over-saturate the colors and push the blacks. This is probably due to the fact I wear dark sunglasses in addition to a tinted faceshield and that's just how I saw it. Sometimes if I up the clarity it will create halos like an HDR, especially in the black and whites. There are at least two photos for this RR that actually are HDRs. They were created from three exposures and automatically merged inside the Pentax K7.

Thanks for the compliments atkwventure.

jadedillusion, I hope the honeymooners are doing well! There are some romantic camping spots up there on the rim.

Hi Dave, we're doing great. We camped at Knoll Lake a month ago. It was a great place, we brought the dogs so we were in the truck, no bike.

There are a lot of places in your report we need to ride. I rode a 640 Adventure up the Four Peaks road several years ago (7 to be exact). That whole area has some nice riding. I haven't taken the 990 there yet. Now it looks like we need to get up there and explore.

Hi there Dave- Thanks for the great RR! I am going to try and recreate your route for myself.

I haven't lived there since the 80's but I used to take family and friends from CA on a similar sightseeing loop. The idea was to show them how much the landscape varied in one tour. I usually started the tour with a drive up Black Mountain in Cave Creek to show them territorial architecture built into the rocks. From there it was up the Mogollon Rim and over to Oak Creek Canyon with a stops at Montezuma's Castle and Tuzigoot. Then up through Jerome and Prescott, and finally down to Wickenberg. In that loop they saw Sonoran desert, vast grasslands with cattle ranches, thick pine forests and great color everywhere. Walt Disney couldn't have made it better.

Then day 2 I'd plop my little tin boat in Saguaro or Canyon Lake and putt them upstream to the dam. Priceless country. Hard to believe 3 million people live there now.

My bike is in a garage in Cave Creek right now. I'm going to visit it for the month of Feb. It'll be chilly then, but I should be able to ride some of those roads. Thanks again.

Sycamore Point

I was hoping to see an awesome sunset at Sycamore Point. While riding out I notice there are enough clouds to possibly make happen.

I found a group of free-ranging horses near the point. Would the stallion percieve a threat to his bitches from the big KTM?

The view off the Mogollon Rim from Sycamore Point

There were signs indicating no camping within 1.5 miles of the point. I waited until sunset and the light was disappointing. After last night I decide I want to find a place to camp before dark. So I hurried back up the road.

5 miles later I found a spot near JD Dam Lake. There was a short loop drive off the road with several fire rings. No one else was around. Someone left behind a bunch of firewood. Score!

Day 3 Stats

Of course the light turns magical AFTER I left the viewpoint!

The light fades leaving me alone in the dark forest of tall pines.

The Milky Way and free firewood illuminate my camp.

The stars spin as the elk and coyotes keep me company with their repeated calls.

I stay up late reading and keeping the fire lit. This is the life!

Day 4

I'm up at first light and packing up camp. It's a little chilly this morning.

The Morning Sun Peeks Through the Trees

For some reason I'm in a splendid mood this morning. I find myself packing up camp and singing out loud...

It's alright if you love me
It's alright if you don't
'Cause, I'm not afraid of you running away honey
I get the feeling you won't

I'm not even sure when I last heard Tom Petty's Break Down or why it popped into my head. I suddenly feel embarrassed to be singing aloud. Everyone I know already thinks I'm crazy for riding off to be alone, I don't need to be seen singing to myself. I look around sheepishly to see if anyone is watching...

Oh yeah, That's right. I'm alone!

Break down, honey go ahead and give it to me
Break down, honey take me tonight
Break down, I'm standing here can't you see?
Break down, it's all right, it's all right, it's all right

Wait a minute! It's NOT all right. I hope i didn't just jinx myself with a break down.

White Horse Lake

Perkinsville Road

Perkinsville road is paved for a while further south. It doesn't look heavily traveled with the grass taking over. Down the rim again.

I head towards Jerome on Perkinsville Road. I wasn't sure what to expect. I'd read an online article for four-wheelers that made this road sound very difficult, steep, rocky, narrow, hair-raisin'... Last night I met a nice couple at Sycamore Point. He said the road was easy. Okay, I'll try it.

I crossed the rails...

...and an old bridge.

Up we go.......

Did you do some painting with your flashlight on this one? If so, can you tell us more about it?

You are correct Cannonshot. I painted with an LED flashlight. If I remember correctly it took several tries to get the light balanced enough, although it's not perfect.

Pentax K7 w/ Pentax SMC DA* 16-50 f2.8 at 16mm
Shutter: 25 seconds
Aperture: f2.8
ISO: 800 (a little too high and noisy for my camera, but I wasn't getting the Milky Way to show up at ISO 400.)

I spent more time painting the background with flashlight to get the trees to show up.

I then played around with it in Lightroom

Holy Crap! I've never even seen half that stuff in Lightroom!

No wonder your photos are so amazing - nice cameras, a good eye, and tons of time and effort. Oh, and that pretty orange thing kinda helps, too!

Thanks for the peek behind the curtain

I get comments about me doing tours and I think of all the people I'd hurt and leave to the vultures...I want to go on a "How to take a picture." tour with Dave.
