CX500 vs. The Gorge

So, I have decided to make a continuing saga out of the many amazing rides I have discovered around the Columbia River Gorge. I am remaining (for now) within the 50 mile diameter area - "my playground" - described in my initial post: (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=620864)

There are so many great roads, this may take awhile - but I am having a blast and I love sharing this amazing area with y'all....

I will update regularly so keep checking back for new rides......

a little background:

My Ride: 1978 Honda CX500 with 20,000 miles, local barn find, paid $550

The Rides: Over 5000 miles logged (and counting) all within a 50 mile diameter of my house, an 80/20 mix of Paved/Gravel back-roads. The loop below is a rough outline of my playground.

"Upgrades": (in order) All fluids flushed/replaced; Inline fuel filter installed; New front tire; Black duct tape seat repair (2Xroll); New fork seals (wanted to add 20w to improve handling but was impatient and went with the 10w available, will upgrade eventually); New battery; Multiple carburetor cleanings; "Silhouette" windshield creatively mounted (detachable); New rear tire - Shinko E-705 Dual-Sport, one size up from stock; The "Pine Sol Surprise"tm;

ATGATT?: Of course.

without further ado........

Todays trip is probably one of the most "historic" rides in my playground - due to the road itself - the last little leg of the Old Columbia River Highway running between Mosier and The Dalles (aka The Rowena Loops) - it was designed not to exceed a maximum grade of 5% and curve radius of 200 feet, which apparently translates into some really freakin awesome motorcycle riding. The return leg on 7 Mile also has some ridiculous curves backed by epic views.

Provisions:

Gear:

Bike:

I keeed. Bike:

The start of something beautiful........

Fall is almost here

Rowena Crest from the bottom of the loops

In the middle of the loops, was trying to capture all the turns visible from here, but couldn't

Near the end of the loops, just below the crest

From the crest...Fun stuff!!

This corner is a blast!

See the white picket fences that line sections of the loops?

The gorge to the east

The mouth of the Klickitat river and Lyle WA to the north

I spy a new road over there to explore

Salmon run is on!

stupid fence......

Mt. Hood explodes into view just beyond this crest, but alas, I haven't yet taken any pictures when the weather was nice.....

This is also an incredible view in nice weather, the high desert plateau's of Oregon just stretch into forever

This is where my camera informed me it's memory was full....

Hope you enjoyed todays somewhat soggy trip!

The Dump Run

Had to go out again today.....it's been raining all night and on and off this morning, but, the way I figure it, I don't stand a chance of doing a long journey if I can't get a little wet in my own backyard....

Todays ride is responsible for most of the 5000 miles I've put on the bike - I use it as my test track when I play at being a motorcycle technician. It is an amazing little loop, and I'm on it in less then 2 min. from my house. It's made me realize how special this area is for riding, and how special riding is to me. I have affectionately dubbed it: (this ended up having a dual meaning)

my name is "el guapo nada"

Let's get started!

proof that summer did happen here

nice kitty.....

my favorite corner in this section

The Klickitat Mtns in the distance to the north soaking up some rain. See the dump?

same spot, looking to the south

and around the corner is.......

had to hold the bike up while taking this one

...and this one

this is the succession of the uphill right in the 2 previous photos - this section always makes me feel like I'm in a race

mo-tardy....a decrepit schoolhouse in a field....slightly off the mapped route.....

that looks damp

water crossing!

narrowly avoided this bad-boy

this is where I speed test the bike...top speed so far is 120 mph.......really......well, maybe more like 89mph

yes.....yes, that definitely looks damp.

every time I pass this it makes me think "work in progress"

one of the many scenic corners in this section

same corner as above

break time!

such a pretty thang....

just behind my bike - 8 Mile creek

yes, it is dumping on me now

one of the coolest corners in this section

it's raining, it's pouring.....

.....the old man, he's snoring.....

.....bumped his head in the middle of the bed.....

....and couldn't get up in the morning!....(same corner as above)

did 'em!

Dam!

barge on the Columbia, or rather "Lake Celilo", in the distance......

The Dalles (means "the narrows")

There is a huge mountain there.....I swear!

Thats Sevenmile Hill in the distance, the hill I rode down yesterday

Traditional canti-levered Indian fishing platforms on the Columbia, just below the dam

heading north on 197 back to my "access" road

backtracking the first section of my ride...the sky was amazingly divided and just incredible to ride under

the racing section

this one is to prepare you for the next photo......

as the title suggests: a dump. (it was hidden behind a hill in an earlier photo)

Hope y'all had a great weekend! Thanks again for checking out my rides....there will be more to come.........

15 Mile Rd. Loop

...I am fortunate to have 3 day weekends..... so I decided I would continue "documenting" today. NO rain for this ride, just about perfect weather as far as I'm concerned....what a way to spend a Monday.......

Another old schoolhouse, this one in much better shape, near the beginning of 15 Mile

gettin' out there..

love the exposed rock in the hills around here

Fairbanks, OR, or Ore. as the sign over the scoolhouse reads

Abandoned schoolhouse in Fairbanks

even got some swamp action

15 Mile creek runs parallel the road most of the time

trying to capture the Big Sky........

Oh deer....

this guy seemed so forlorn

this is my favorite run-down structure Iv'e found so far, makes me think of the Wizard of Oz, especially when the surrounding fields are all green

heading up Japanese Hollow to Pleasant Ridge

pavement ends eventually

on top of the ridge

starting to come down

Fall is definitely close

last little bit of gravel, freshly graded for me

the last section of pavement on this loop is super twisty, a ton of fun!

Thats all for todays ride! Have a good one!

Nice photos, guapo. Like the liquid cooled transverse v-twin too.

I was born and raised over on the wet side; what's midwinter like in your country?

Great photos of great roads!

I love the CX! I sold and serviced those over 30 years ago whenI was just a young pup. I've always wanted one…

Ride on!

Thanks!

Thanks all....glad your enjoying so far, there are many rides to come....stay tuned.....

@Kinsman - These days it's anybodies guess, but typically VERY COLD with at least 1 or 2 snowfalls..sometimes more sometimes less....the Gorge can be quite unpredictable as far as weather goes......and with this global weirding...much more so....wouldn't surprise me if we launched back into spring......

Neat pics! And add me to the list of CX500 fans. I borrowed one for a couple weeks way back when and loved it.
