Monitor Pass Ride

Little ride RUTS North did exploring the Monitor Pass area off hwy 89

It starts here in Markleeville

This old homestead reminded me of the Blair Witch Porject
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

We believe these cabins are still being used by the sheep herders that use this area
[IMG][/IMG]

Some of the trail was hard to find, relied on the gps a lot though here
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

Found some nice single-track but it was short and ended in a wilderness area

[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

Found a nice 4x4 road that was heading in the direction we wanted to go
[IMG][/IMG]

At 8600 elevation we took a short break

Topaz Valey below us

My loving wife demanding more technical riding
[IMG][/IMG]

Saw what looks to be like a small fire off hwy 4
[IMG][/IMG]

Doug again fixing his wifes front flat
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

Stoped at the Iron Horse Cantina off 395
[IMG][/IMG]

Top the day off with a ride over poison creek trail

Nice. I lived in Markleeville for a couple winters many years ago. I hiked and x country skied in those areas and have always wondered what the dirt biking would be like. Thanks for showing me.

I have tracks of every trail in the area.

Really shouldn't post pictures of illegal riding off designated roads and trails.

Looks like you may have been in the Heenan state property which is all closed.

We may have been in that area but there were no signs saying no motorized on any of the roads even at the gate which could be easly pass on a bike and one of the 4x4 roads basically routed us back down to the area. One of the sheep guys said the rangers had busted some pot growers a month ago so maybe if they opened the gate up to the public the drug guys would not choose to be in the area. Unless the sheep hurders are the pot growers. I did track the area but basically the main part of the ride was not worth doing if the area is closed. The trails on the east side of 89 are open to the public. If that area is closed that would be morally and ethically wrong to not put up signs in the area. There are clear signs of where the wilderness area and the road into the area is a nice graveled road being used by sheep and cattle and no signs stating no motorized vehicles, other than just exploring it's not worth going into.

Toiyabe like all other forests in the US has just completed their travel management plans. Did you comment?

On this one we got screwed. I appealed the Bridgeport plan because they did not include any single track. Appeal denied. They will take a while to post all routes but basically unless it is posted open, it is closed. There are very few if any rangers out there to catch you but just saying it is poor form to post pictures of vehicles going cross country on what is quite obvious not a approved trail.

We cleared a route most of which is single track form Lee Vinning to Topaz now it is all closed and yet no one but motorcycles have ever used it.
