Kansas - Cimarron Nat'l Grasslands

Gonna be making a beeline for Baxter Springs KS in about a week then across the southern tier of KS en route to Denver. I was thinking about camping at the Grasslands unless any of you locals advise otherwise. Any suggestions on interesting things/places to see between Baxter Sprgs and Denver are much appreciated. BTW, I'll be in my pickup if that makes a difference. Thanks, Dave

Cimarron National is a neat area to camp. Check out Point of Rocks and Middle Spring, both important points on the Santa Fe Trail.

Coffeyville is worth visiting. Check out the Dalton Gang's shootout info.

Sedan, KS is a neat town. Check out the Red Buffalo Ranch.
(http://www.theredbuffalo.com/ranchmain.asp) Check out the Butcher Falls (N37 08.836 W96 16.083)

Near Medicine Lodge is the Gypsum Hills. Take the scenic route. http://www.kansastravel.org/gypsumhills.htm

Liberal has a very nice Air Museum http://www.kansastravel.org/airmuseum.htm

Visit Jacob's Well (N 37° 14.470 W 099° 58.888) west of Ashland, KS.

Another place to consider camping is Lake Scott State Park. It is a very unique place in western, KS. http://www.naturalkansas.org/lake.htm

Thanks so much. I love all the country out there but it's real nice to get the perspective of those more local to the area.

Bring your varmint rifle. You will see more dog towns than you can imagine, and most rancher/farmers will welcome you to keep the pesky, flea bitten vermin thinned out. More fun than a fresh knobby on a golf course, well, almost

(I bet I just pissed off a bunch of gun hating, vermin loving golfers)

Keep on the dirt roads and you will find a beautiful place to travel.

It's pretty amazing. You're driving across miles of tabletop-flatness and feedlots, turn off the road and disappear into a rock canyon with a lake at the bottom. Pretty cool. The wind down there at night will get your attention.

When are you going to be in Baxter Springs? And is there a reason you need to be in Baxter Springs because Fort Scott is worth seeing and has some neat places to camp.

Sorry I missed this, I was on the road. I'm in Baxter now until tomorrow (9/28) visiting friends. I'll check out Ft Scott, thanks for all your guidance

I discovered the Mined Land refuges this summer. Looking forward to getting back there with the kayaks.
