Adventures Of Li'l K1(1)P

I purchased this little bike last year at the CJMC Auburn Show, pretty much for our 2011 Mt. Hamilton Challenge.

Last year, it never made it more than a few miles from the starting point. I worked on it and got it running pretty decent, or so I thought. This year, City Bike had it's second annual Function at the Junction Ride sunday and I planned on making it. Seeing as how the Mighty Tempter is feeling a little less mighty, I decided to ride Li'l K1(1)p to it, for fun! Started out in a San Jose parking lot and tried to start it, not much luck, oh no a repeat of last year. I told my group to not wait for me and go on ahead. Decided to add some gas and clean the plug. With a lot of coaxing, it finally ran long enough that I felt it would get me over the hill to the meet, some 40 miles away. Finally underway, passing through east San Jose and up we go. I get to the first stop and I know I was going a blistering speed, but it was not enough to catch them.

Grant Ranch. Yep, I'm going all the way up there, to that tiny little peak.

I give it all it's got and I catch up to the group at the observatory.

This Honda held me up all the way up the hill and he couldn't shake me. I almost unleashed the entire fury of the 80cc mill on him.

Beautiful day and what a view.

Yes, just look at the serpentine road I just came up on.

We leave the peak and travel down to the junction and the bike is happily purring down the mountain. We're stuck behind a truck and horse trailer and he's dropping road apples at big bumps. We end up passing him with a quick twist of the throttle. We get to a flat section and the engine suddenly gets louder and louder. Uh, ok, that's weird, wonder what....bam, I run over what I am certain is a part of my bike. No shoulder to pull over and images of a huge truck and road apple dropping appendage has me looking for a safe place to pull over. When I do, the truck is nowhere to be found, sheesh, the road apple throwing "Flying Dutchman". Wish I took pictures of the offending part as it became apparent the header pipe fell off and then I ran over it. I didn't realize another member was behind me and he helped get the pipe back in place. Thanks Buddy, . Once back together, I gingerly test it out for a few miles and gain confidence and a silly grin that it's all good now. We finally get to the junction and it is both crowded and hot.

We had the local lunch available, $10 hamburger with potato salad, soda and chips. City Bike then had the awards of oldest bikes. I couldn't quite hear who won, but pretty sure this one won oldest American.

I'm pretty sure this belongs to Paul Westerfield(?) of Cannonball entrant. I'd seen him once before in the 2010 Cannonball when I went to Victorville Harley to see them come in.

Not sure who won oldest euro bike, but one of our members won on his 1963 Honda 305 police bike. The lineup of entrants.

I should have taken more pictures. Here are some shots of the bikes that showed up.

Alright, Buells!

Uh oh! What's that? Guess what he's gunning for. Time to leave before he gets his sights on me.

Time to saddle up then.

Got a long way to go, well for me anyway.

Plus, I wanted to get a jump on my group just in case of the long shot of a breakdown.

Lonely way back.

I think I've got them beat by two.

Long and winding road?

The top once again.

Our group is reunited. The bike with the tan fenders is the Japanese winner of the oldest there, a 1963 Honda 305 police.

Time to finish our ride down.

I tell you, after that day, the torture chamber that passes as my seat has got to be worked on.

But, it was still a fun day and I know what to do to get the bike ready for September's Mt. Hamilton Challenge.

Today was our official Mt Hamilton Challenge. I have all the confidence in the li' Suzuki as it's already made it once.

Always a surprise as what shows up to this event. It was specified that 200cc and less be the required bike of choice.

This guy rode this all the way from Napa. He should enter the IBA on it.

He's got the same idea as I do, two strokes won't make it on one tank.

And away we buzz....

We wind through Alum Rock and up to Grant Ranch Park for a bit of a rest.

I count 28 bikes in our line up.

These bikes really are tiny.

This is just some of the fun to come and as you can tell, another terrible day in California.

Whoops, there they go...

After numerous people passing me by, I'm thinking what Chief Brody says, "You're gonna need a bigger boat!"

I do make it to the top without losing any parts this time.

Local constabulary.

Big cones you have there.

Time to get down to the Junction.

Everyone makes it, other than one errant gas can, all in one piece.

We have our lunch, shoot the breeze and relax for a bit. People start to make their way back up and over the hill.

The top again for a small regroup and goodbyes.

The Li' Suzuki is buzzing along now, like a horse, it knows it's time to go home and seems to runs better. Added just a few miles to the odo and realize the speedo must be in kilometers and they just put mph on the face to pass the US mandates. I could have sworn I saw 70mph at one point.
