What's your thoughts on 18th or 25th Oct,
could do an overnighter @ Micalong? 25/26th I have off that week
for a jaunt through Picadilly Circus westward?
Next door neighbour, Macca is keen to do a ride out through that area,
1984 XT600 Yam, did the OCR with me this year.
Give us your thoughts? Anyone else?

Correct. Probably about 8:30 - I'll work out how long it'll take and let you know.

Hi Baz, I'm currently in SA reading this. I'll basically ride anywhere, east, west. up, down, I'm just keen. I'm not so hot on an overnighter though, that means I'd have to carry a bunch more shit on my XR. Really, anywhre up in the Brindies is fine with me. Gotta go now, driving to my old man's place.

Wicked POMs day trip to Araluen

Met some of the guys on their ride to Araluen and beyond for the 3-day weekend. I can officially confirm that I am no longer a virgin of the dirty back road.

Having explained that I'm a noob to Oz dirt roads with no armour on the new bike and no armour for me I thought they were going to be easy on me. (They may even say they were!)

Picture the scene...a novice POM on a month-old, barely run in DRZ400E trying to keep up with seasoned...well...slightly hungover, experienced riders desperate to get to the pub in Araluen before they had to resort to breaking out the, (very substantial), stocks of booze they were carrying.

2 notable highlights were Fish juggling the weight transfer between fuel in his supertank and cider in his panniers to counter-steer round bulldust covered corners to spectacular effect and Reece making the most spectacular save of an over-balanced bike by pirouetting on his heel and fishtailing off up the road.

Anyway...just a couple of pics cos I was shaking too much to take any others.

Saluting the POM.

Ready for the off.

What crossings [Goodradigbee River], are still accessible these days?

Between Brindabella Rd & Wee Jasper,
I remember there was a few back in the 70's when I did enduros up there
then I suppose it's all locked off, subdivisions, etc.

I reckon you'd struggle - It might be possible to get across the river at McIntyres hut, although you'd be pushing it (literally). On the topo there is a track on the other side. There's another crossing closer to WJ (swinging bridge?) but that definitely goes through private land.

I'm home now.
Crossings of the river are basically zero these days. At McIntyres Hut there is indeed a matching trail on the maps on the other side, but it's just gone now. It was unuseable 20 yrs ago. I think we are restricted to bridges really. I did have an idea that it was crossable when low at Flea Creek, but I'm unsure what you'd do once on the other side.

Question Off-road training days in ACT???

Thought I'd ask this here first as a course in ACT would be easiest.

Does anyone know of anywhere locally that provides courses for off-road motorcycle training? The GF and I are both noobs and I want her, (OK..us both), to have some basic training on overcoming obstacles, hill-climbs, hill descents, wheelies and stuff like that in a reasonably controlled environment.

Any thoughts?

An alternative might be for someone who is experienced from ADVriders to run a course? I'd pay a few dollars and maybe there'd be other takers?

the bmw adventure course at tom groggin is superb.........

not sure bout who runs it tho....

do you still want to get some hands on practice with a tyre??? ive got one that needs changing....

cheers fish

ps.... just setting up a day in the brindies with training and practice would probably be cheap and easy... each person can just brainpick skills from the others for some basic techniques and skills.

PomInOz,
School of hard knocks has always been my best teacher!
Just get out there with a few likely lads,
who are prepared to help out, [pick up bikes, etc.]
make it known that you want to improve your skill levels,
navigation skills are a good thing to learn to!
I'm an old topographic map gent, but learning about them GPS thingys
DSMRA are a good mob in Canberra who have skill level type ride days,
I'll see if I can find their web address for you.

Cheers
