bmw g450x/ktm 450exc-make love not war.
not looking to start a pissing match as many times the "this vrs's that" threads do. I am buying one or the other and looking for advice from people with knowledge of both OR can lead me to the the thread that probably exists already that compares them. I did search the thumpers forum and didnt really find the one that really helped me. I know there are other 450's out there but am really stuck on these two right now. I need street legal, but will be living in ouray colorado and need a good off road warrior. Both will be 2010 or 2011 models. 90% off road. Like I said- if the thread exists please post it for me, if it doesnt then I would appreciate any information you can share. Thanks in advance

I have a 2010 BMW G450X, and my wife has a 2009 KTM 450EXC. They are both very good motos. I strongly prefer the BMW. We are both AMA D37 desert racers on these bikes.

![]() Both bikes have strengths and weaknesses. The BMW will turn on a dime but the KTM feels like a more planted bike particularly in washes.

Back at the dealer over the weekend. Talking to the bmw sales guy who happened to be filling in for the ktm sales guy. He had good to say about both, but consistently mentioned the issues of jetting for the ktm when running in the mountains. Seemed to suggest that when going from 6000' to 10,000 ft there would be problems ? Humm ? I ran my XRR jetted for 1000' at 9,000'. it didnt run good but it ran. I find it hard to believe that I leave my place at 6000' and am gonna have to stop along the trail at 8000' to mess with it to get over the 10000' pass.
I know he really loves the fuel injection of the bmw and the 3 yr warrantee. But I am having a hard time falling in love with the bmw still. KTM just looks more stout and does have better suspension ( I think ). Also looks like the BMW will be a few hundred cheaper, but its a 2010. the KTM is a 2011. Both around 8 grand. I am a smaller guy -5'8" 150#, (and old), one of the guys at the shop who was a bit bigger said, " if I was your size, id go beemer" is suggesting the beemer is lighter handling or does he just like the sound of his own voice ? decisions |
