Well I love your bikes guys and I would love to be able to squizee some hp out of my XRL
So far I have:
Complete FMF system
Uniair filter and jetting
XR 600 sprokets
Renthal handlebar
Raiser for handlebar
Clark 4.7 gallon tank

As you do guys I love this bike. It is like an old sexy lady.
I would love to be able to increase it's performance though without loosing it reliability. So I was thinking not to touch the engine but maybe only cams +\- carb. What do you think about it?

Cheers

Nic

Power = displacement + compression ratio.

A cam on a stock engine is like lipstick on a hog.

Won't this combination need an increase of fueling?

Is there any chance to maintain Honda original reliability?

If you don't want to touch the engine then you've gone about as far as you can go with the exhaust, Uni filter, and jetting. I'd replace the piston with a high compression Wiseco or XRs Only piston. The stock compression ratio on the XRL is very low, 8.9:1. The motor will still be rock solid and it's the best bang for your buck. Don't mess around with cams until you've replaced the stock piston, and for god's sake don't put a Hot Cam in it or your reliability will go out the window.

Hi,

So which ratio of compression you would go for?
Would I need a different carburettor?

Thanks

Nic

C/R of 11:1 will give a good boost in power while still alowing you to run pump gas. Stock carb will work fine, in fact you may not even need to change the jetting.

Look at my dedicated Thread (pag 3?) and my Lybia 2009 thread. Link in the signature.

Ciao

So, as some of you know I've been healing up from a rescent surgery. To all the people who relayed their best wishes, thanks! It meant a lot.

Now it's time to get back to one of the loves of my life, my XR600. So here's what's next, I'm going to replace the 125x2w stator for a 200w single output stator and switch the off-road lights to HID.

Pictures and diagrams to follow.

That machine is only savage. Savage I say. Savage meaning 'friggin hell it's awesome!'.
Have been following you on a number of threads over the past couple of years XRider, borrowed a lot of ideas, and have been helped a lot!! Bit tricky getting the parts at the right price over here on the other side of the atlantic but, im getting there.
I have been rebuilding my '96 XR600 from scratch and am at the electrics stage. Adding all the lights and aux power needed that my recently bought ricky stator 200W dual output stator and new reg/rec - 100W to bike, 100W to a pair of uprated headlights from a 250 Baja. Any ideas on how to rig up what goes where wiring wise through a stock XR switch on the 100W lighting cct?

Scamp

I've got your back Scamp, I'm assuming you are going for a dual voltage system, i.e. AC/DC. I'll draw up the wiring diagram and post it as soon as I can.

Thanks for the props!

XRider

P.S. Need pics of the Twin.

Cheers man.
Yup. Was planning on leaving the stock AC reg in for the headlights with 100w and then the other 100w via a reg/rec for running lights, vapor, gps, heated grips etc. If there is an easier, more straight forward way, i'm all ears!

As requested!
Couple of shots of the Twin on tour this year around Ireland. I would say the twin is a rare enough site over there yeah?

Resting after a heavy lunch in Roundstone, County Galway

Just about to summit Healy Pass in Kerry

Back home all washed up.

Current project...
