Registration papers came in today so I had to go to the dealer and pick it up. And everything is ready, modded, bolted on except for the rear brake disc protector (shark fin) and new eprom mapping (will be done at first service).

Guess what? This is one hell of a bike. Like the HP2 I just sold but 60 kilos lighter. Love it already!







About the (original KTM) luggage rack. I got me a pair of Wolfman bags that fit right on it after modifying the straps.

Here's a mini report...
I loved the HP2, for 3 years I said I would never depart from it. However...
The HP2 is BIG and HEAVY, especially on the front. The HP2 is the superior bike compared to a R1200GS/Adventure or F800GS when you do a lot of off-road stuff. But compared to the new 690 it is a tractor. Ergonomically it is OK, I even found it good for longer rides (400-500km a day). But if you like single-tracks and technical stuff it is a difficult machine. At least for me it was.

Enough said about the HP2, a truly great bike with character and looks.

Now on to the 690 R.
I drove for about 3 hours today, mostly slow riding, trying to figure everything out, playing with my new Montana. I also did about 20 km off-road, taking it easy, see how it handles. To be perfectly honest, I find the bike to be very similar to the HP2. Not the engine. Although it is extremely powerful it is a thumper and lacks the smoothness of the boxer engine. But I like that, it is very much alive and difficult to break in, it is so strong you need to keep your right hand under control all the time!

Ergonomically the bike is sound. I sit as comfortable on it's seat as on the big twin but you notice the huge difference in weight all the time. When you go off the pavement you just go, fast, no heavy front trying to go left when you want to go right... I also played a bit in the sand and there I found the difference to be even greater. With the HP2 I found sand to be a bit out of my league but with the 690 I had no problems keeping a straight line. Perfect!

Although a lot of my riding buddies tell me otherwise, i think I have made the right choice and I'm sure anybody trying out the new KTM 690 Enduro R will be very pleasantly surprised about this bike's capabilities...

Edit: for those who wonder where the right mirror is: the factory mapping switch is located on that very spot. So off you go mirror!

Seems to me like a mirror is much more useful than the mapping switch!

I can't tell the difference between "standard" and "performance", and "soft" is plain boring. So the only time I've ever touched that switch (except to try it out when I first learned about it) is for low octane fuel, and I've only done that twice in the whole life of the bike. I've used my right-hand mirror more than twice.

I've heard some people talk about using "soft" for mud? I don't ride in mud much... but I've never had a problem. Maybe some people suck at throttle control.

interesting you say that, as I cant either? I did notice a distinct difference a while back but seems to have disappeared, I put it down to the 2nd/3rd gear mod I did last year? Have checked the switch and wiring and all seem ok. Bike runs perfectly so not too worried but interested to hear if anyone else noticed this?

Congrats on the new bike!

There's some mixed information about the seat height of '12 Enduro R – the official KTM site says 935 mm but the broschure says 910 mm.

Since the ground clearance and suspensions travel have reduced I guess that the latter must be right?
