"Slippy" Soggy Sudbury Spree from Sportsman's

On September 23, 2010, 8 KTM's, a Honda, and a Suzuki departed from various places in Southern Ontario for a 3 day weekend of adventure riding. Headquarters would be Sportsman's Lodge on Kukagami Lake.

It was sunny and hot in St. Catharines when I left.

Picking up Ed in Wainfleet and transfering trailers. Still hot and sunny.

The weather in Sudbury was not going to be so nice. A system with embedded thunderstorms was coming up from Colorado and would dump up to 100 mm (4 inches) of rain on Thursday night and Friday.

The routes would be three loops of about 250 km each:

Paul John and Ed relaxing on Thursday night in the common room at the top of the tower. Nothing but wood.

Day 1

On Day 1 we would be riding to Marten River and back. Sure enough it rained like a bastard all night. It was going to be very wet.

Looks wet down there.

Steve got up at 3:30 am in Toronto so he could make it for Day 1.

John looking down from "The Tower".

5 of the 10 riders decided that it was too wet and opted out. So it was to be the usual 4 KTM's and a Honda today.

Day 1

Unfortunately I don't have a lot of pictures from Day 1, since it was so wet my camera went on the fritz. There were lots of missed photo ops.

Good thing we had fresh knobbies.
1 Honda XR600R.
1 KTM 400exc.
1 KTM 525exc.
2 KTM 640 Adventures.

Typical bridge.

Day 1

At one point on Day 1 we took a rough trail in an attempt to cross the bridgeless Tomagami River. Naturally when we were as far back in the bush as possible, Steve's 640 decided to have wiring harness problems (apparently KTM uses wires the thickness of cat fur). Hence the long period of stopped time. Luckily John is an electrical genius and got us going again. But we gave up on the river crossing.

Necessary equipment for wet weather riding.

Bench racing.

Dinner was lasagna.

Looks like the fork seals may have been blown out on that Honda before you ever got to ride. Yikes.

Both my XR's have original fork seals with never a leak. 20 years old and 10 years old. I use ATF for fork oil.

Day 2

On Day 2 we were going to be ten riders so it was decided to split in two groups following the same route. One group would be led by Warren, with Ben, Bob, Barry, and Justin. 4 KTM 450s and Bob on a Suzuki 400. The other group would be led by Ed with Paul, John, Steve and me on the lone Honda.

The trails would still be very wet, but at least it wasn't pouring.

The colours were great.

Our group ended up leading so we had to be the first to scope out any deep water.

Ed hung up on a beaver dam.

Time for lunch in the middle of nowhere. Granola bars!

Apparently this part of the trail we just came through is normally dry.

Day 2

Nice fast 2 track.

Eventually we came to this long rocky uphill that was full of so much runoff it had turned into a creek. It got steeper and rockier around the corner. At the top of the hill we went down the other side which was more of the same.
