Airhead Fork Part needed

Hey, I pulled the bottom snap rings out of the fork on my 84, and I cant get one of them back in all the way. I think I may have deformed it a bit so it does not snap all the way open again. I can get the drain screw in, but it is touching the ends of the snap ring. Realoem does not show the snap ring. Does anyone know what the part number is? I cannot match it up with one in mcmaster carr, I already tried.

Why not call Chicago BMW? Looks like you're in the neighborhood. Or I would file it down if it isn't goofed up too badly.

Yeah, but Chicago BMW does not order parts without a part number. They will not look them up. That is why I need a part number.

If you're speaking about an R80 G/S fork, the circlip at the bottom, the drain plug goes in the spot shown below, sorry for the bad picture. If you have replaced the o-ring you might need to compress things to get the plug to seat fully against the o-ring.

make sure the clip is fully seated, a flat punch might help.

Yes it is that clip, and I removed it to replace the oring. But when I pulled it, it was between the open parts of the clip and that is where it is now. I just looked on realoem.com and the G/S has different forks from the R100, but maybe it will work that way on mine too. I tried to punch the clip into the groove, and it will not go any further. I guess I am just concerned because one sits into the groove a little further than the other one. I am not sure why. The difference in the gap between the two is less than 1mm so maybe it does not matter. I just don't want my forks coming apart while I am riding.

Did you get the o-ring from BMW??? I never could find the part # for it and had to go to a rubber and gasket business. The o-ring I got was barely bigger, so I had to use a hydraulic press to get the o-ring compressed enough to get the snap ring to fully seat in the grove.

I never got the drain to fit between the ears of the snap ring. But had to put the ring in first, but orient it so that the drain plug could go in the location in the drawing.

Make doubly sure that ring is fully seated!!!

look for dirt or burs in the grove, or clip

I could not find the o-ring form bmw either. I got some from mcmaster carr and had to use a large clamp to get it all together. The one slider went together just fine and the snap ring snapped right into the groove without a problem. The other one had a little difficulty going all the way into the groove. That is the one I am concerned about. I pulled it out and replaced it several times and am thinking I may have tweaked it a little so it will not snap fully open again. From one slider to the other, the difference between the opening in the snap rings is about .6 mm. Maybe I am just too nervous about it. I have tapped it with a punch and a hammer and it will not seat any better that that.

BTW, did you install the bottom plugs dry or use a sealer on them? I used loctite 680 on mine. I don't know if it was necessary, but it looked like there was some sort of sealer on them when I pulled them apart.

I used hylomer....almost unobtainium. Not sure what 680 is, never set up I suppose.


I hate G/S forks, r100gs ones are so much better....
