Morning arrived...

The ground was damp, thoughts of little dust and good traction filled our minds as last minute preperations went on... and on.... and on... No pics of the yummy breakfast Tim made for us... but a huge thanks to him!

Ok. Ready? 33 miles each way.... no problem... right?

My wonderful girlfriend, Rollergirl, had said, "Let me get this straight, you want me so sit in your dirty truck with 3 stinky guys and no A/C for 5 hours? Then you want me to make breakfast before you leave? Then you want me to run up the trail and video you as you come by? Then you want me to pack up the truck, drive 80 miles of twisty road with a trailer, and meet you at the end of the trail? Oh, and you would like a BBQ, cold beer, watermelon and a massage waiting for you? And then you want me to sit in the truck for another 5 hours while you guys lie about how well you rode?"

Me: "That sounds pretty good to me, and it was my birthday last week "

Rollergirl: "Not this time my love, this sounds like a boys weekend. "

So there we were, Friday afternoon, Tim, Traveltoad and I, driving up to the Sierras in a dirty truck with no A/C, wondering how we were going to shuttle the Dusy Ershim trail.

Tim suggested that we get to the end and simply turn around and ride back to the truck along the trail. That way we don't wear our tires out on the slab. What a fantastic idea, we agreed. That even solves the dilemma of which direction to ride the trail.

And an added bonus, this could answer the question of whether a silly man could ride a 950 on the Dusy Ershim. Surely riding the trail twice in one day on a 450 would be about the same as riding the trail once on a 950.

And just to be clear... I would never (and I am pretty sure I mean this), never ride the Dusy/Ershim trail both directions in one day on the 950.

Me. Well, my half of a 950 anyway.

Tim - the voice of reason and source of great breakfast.

See how Tt isn't quite smart enough to actually say that he wouldn't take a 950 on the Dusy Ershim.

I've never been accused of being smart.

The trail starts right away with big rocks and sets the stage for how the day will look. All the normal disclaimers... it's steeper than it looks, the rock steps are taller than they look, it was cold so there was shrinkage.... etc etc...

Peter,
Am I the sensible or the busy friend? I am just wondering if I am committed for next year or not.

So, as entertaining as this is so far for the 10 people that know about this trail, I think I should fill the rest of you in.
The Dusi Ershim Trail is 33 miles of 4X4 trail that runs between 2 wilderness areas on the west side of the Sierras. It starts at 9000' ASL, goes up a few rocks to 10 000' ASL, and then goes down a few rocks to Courtright Reservoir at 8000'. Apparently big expensive jeeps take between 2 and 4 days to drive one way, and then be picked up by their tow-truck and trailer.

There has been a little debate recently as to which way is harder/easier. Having done both ways back to back, I can honestly say that both ways are a bit rocky . Both seemed the same difficulty to me, although south to north was definitely both wetter and more muddy. That might be because it rained the entire way back.

I'm sure some of you are wondering why there are so many words, and so few pictures. It is because I was riding my ass off, and didn't have the energy to stop and point the camera.

Lots of pretty!

One of these tires worked way better than the other!

Is that an FMF pipe hiding in the boulders?

This is Tim's new one-into-zero exhaust system. It is way lighter than stock.
