Santa Cruz to Arroyo Grande (and back via Pozo etc.)

Last weekend I took another two day ride down from Santa Cruz to Arroyo Grande and back. This is similar to the ride I did in 2008 but there are some variations that I thought people might be interested in so I put together this report.

This is the general route I took:

I headed out early, down Highway 1 (freeway, my least favorite part of the trip) and stopped in Moss Landing where I found this (I come this way often, but I hadn't noticed it before...)

Down Highway 1 to Big Sur, where I stopped at the River Inn for fuel and a break from riding.

I enjoyed the ride down Highway 1 quite a bit, the weather was fine. Sunny, not too warm, and a mild tailwind.

I didn't take many pictures, I was just having a fun time riding. My report from the 2008 ride (link: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=388951 ) included a lot of photos of the coast and the two main dirt through routes down the coast (Coast Road or South Coast Ridge Road), which I opted not to take on this trip.

Down to San Simeon

Lunch in Cambria at this cafe. Excellent pork torta, yum...

Up Santa Rosa Creek Road. This road is a lot of fun on a motorcycle. Multiple riders (including a few dual sports) were coming down the road as I was headed up the hill.

Over the hill on Hwy 46 through Templeton and on to Hwy 229. Another example of an excellent road to ride on a motorcycle. The section south of Creston to Hwy 58 is awesome.

From there I headed east a bit on Hwy 58 and continued south along Huerhuero road and Parkhill Road. These two roads keep the rhythm and flow of 229 going all the way to the Pozo Saloon.

Now for the dirt... I crossed the upper reach of the Salinas River (water crossing in photo) and headed up and over Hi-Mountain Road to Lopez Lake and Arroyo Grande.

The road was in great condition after last week's small amount of rain. Not dusty or muddy, just right for riding.

Arrived at my friend's house in the late afternoon. Tired, but plenty of time to relax and enjoy a dinner out in SLO.

Up early and ready to go. Sunrise with the Oceano dunes in the distance.

Back over Hi-Mountain Road to Pozo. Already warm out, but nice to enjoy the cooler morning air in the shady spots. Some more shots of Hi-Mountain Road (including a few wild turkeys...)

Across the Salinas River and on to Pozo Road.

Headed up Pozo Road, I took a photo of the recent fire here (I was glad that the road was not closed as a result).

Pozo Road, lots of fun. Well graded, great condition, not much dust here either. More pictures today, as I had not been over Pozo Road before.

One of the OHV trails at the summit. This looked pretty tough, even on a dirtbike. I sure wouldn't want to take my truck up it!

View of the road up to the summit.

And back down the other side (towards California Valley).

I turned left here to connect with Highway 58 via Redhill Road. Glad to have a plated bike!

West on Highway 58. Nice views along this stretch.

North on Shell Creek Road. The southern section has some amazing wildflowers in the spring.

Two choices on this stretch of Shell Creek, right on the pavement or left on the dirt. Left!

Stop in Shandon to rest in the shade before heading on my way.

West on Hwy 46 to Estrella Road. River Road to San Miguel. Mission San Miguel, fuel, and some tacos from a local market - just what I needed.

Continued north on Indian Valley Road to Vineyard Canyon.

Up Vineyard Canyon Road to Cross Country Road (thanks for the tip dyvking! ). Nice gravel road across the hills with some great scenery. Eventually connects back to Indian Valley.

North on Indian Valley Road. Long, with quite a few open stretches up the wide valley. Glad not to be on 101...

The valley narrows and you head up over some hills into another valley.

Eventually, the road becomes Peach Tree Road which will connect with Hwy 25 (at Hwy 198). The last time I rode this section I recall it being dirt. No dirt to be found here...

Paved all the way to Highway 198. Nice views though, and I made good time on the pavement. Passed a few motorcycles headed the other way, and a couple of old land rovers.
