a quick run to the Black Hills....1680 miles in 33 hours

After meeting Meef and Tim on their ride (click to read) I looked at their pics of the next day in the Black Hills and knew I HAD to go. If they got there the NEXT day I could do it for sure.

So a quick run down.....

12 hours to Rushmore.......spend 1 hour there.....2 hours riding in the Black Hills and Needles Hwy.......2 hours at Badlands......12 hours back......ehh, Im not far from Wyoming, might as well add that to my ride map so lets tack another 2 hours on.

31 hours as long as I dont need fuel, food or to poop, surely those couldnt add but another 3 or 4 hours. Ive got 2 days off.....ehh, no problem. After checking my figures I decided might as well go for an Iron Butt Association run.....I can clock the SS1000 and BB1500 on the same ride.

So at 10pm on Wednesday night I set off.....figured if I rode there in the dark I would be there come sun up to see the sights.....then ride home in the dark.

Quick run....no excessive pictures.....hell, it would all be pictures of slab for the most part anyways.

The cycle was this.......ride 3 hours....fuel....pee......ride 3 hours.....fuel.....pee....etc. There was a slight variation in Rapid City......ride 3 hours.....fuel.....McDonalds....pee.

After leaving Rapid City I headed south 20 mins or so to Rushmore.

I had NO co-pilot on this ride so I was forced to rely on the picture taking abilities of random bystanders.....and they all sucked. Here after looking directly into the sunlight forever I finally squint for some relief....thats when they took the picture. Ah well, atleast I was there.

After leaving Rushmore I headed south to Custer....then turned my Vision-abego towards Wyoming. I didnt have enough time to actually go anywhere in Wyoming (would have liked to seen Devils Tower) but I wanted to atleast ride IN Wyoming.

Hwy 16 from Custer runs to Newcastle, WY....Id get gas there for "proof" of my turn around point for the Ironbutt folks.

This was slab-ish....but in the Windcave area it was good slab.

After hitting Newcastle I turned around and basically came back the exact same way.

I stopped outside Crazy Horse for a quick pic on the way back thru....I had drove by the first time because of traffic.

My next turn was to get on Needles Hwy just north of Crazy Horse.

The trees were changing colors....spectacular in alot of places.

Needles Highway wasnt long....but it took forever to ride it. Partially because it was so beautiful and partially because there were some real slow fooks in cars in front of me.

After finishing Needles up I had some daylight left but needed to get to the Badlands....so I got on the "regular" road....and even it wasnt that bad.

Stopped at the World Smallest Biker Bar....guess nobody could get there Harley running long enough to get to the bar cause I was the only one there.

Stopped at Wall for my usual .....gas....pee.... combo and got a quick pick of the dinosaur. I absolutely refuse to go to Wall Drug....those signs were annoying as hell, I was boycotting those folks. Now those guys using the old firetrucks as signs for the brewery....wish I had the time to go down there....sounds like it would have been a fun stop.

.......Wall was where I entered the lands of BADNESS.....

I REALLY liked the Badlands. I recently got back from the Grand Canyon - which was my "great white buffalo" - tame by some of you guys standards but I had ALWAYS wanted to ride to the Grand Canyon. I thought the Badlands were, in alot of ways, BETTER then the Grand Canyon. Unless your an uber-hiker your likely not going to see the Grand Canyon but from a distance.....an epic view from the rim. Your IN the Badlands....riding thru them....get off and climb/walk around......it was pretty BADass.

In no particular order....actually I think these might be in reverse order...doesnt really matter.

Here I was scoping out a good view for my self timed pic...cause there was NOBODY there to speak of.....and had there been they would have likely taken a shitty picture.

then back to the slab for the drone home.......

I dont have alot of pics to go with the stories....cause I find riding and picture taking are kinda hard to do at the same time without a co-pilot.

It was a fairly uneventful trip out.....it was fairly chilly. The weather 2 weeks ago (when this trip took place) in Iowa was crappy....it was 36 degrees on a few of nightly rides home from work but mostly averaged mid 40s.....meanwhile this week its been mid to high 50s most mornings. WTF?! So I planned for the cold. I figured if it was mid 40s here (in the night)....it would be mid to high 30s in SD. I figured about right.

I recently bought some Tourmaster Synergy heated gear. The collared vest and full pants liner - great stuff. Im bombing down the interstate at 80mph at 38 degrees toasty as can be.....for hours on end. Great stuff that heated gear is.....and the Tourmaster stuff is economical to. It comes with the heat controller....think the collared vest was $125.....the full pants were $145 or so.

It was basically gas and go. I kept a bag to store all my receipts.....and I used a clipboard to keep track of all my logs and paperwork necessary for the Iron Butt Association. I stopped in a bar on the way back for a witness to sign my forms....my waitress at the bar - I tipped her well so hopefully she will remember me if they call to verify the info with her.....plus she was fuckably hot and in the middle of nowhere SD.

33 hours straight is the longest haul Id ever done on a bike. During my Grand Canyon trip I did 19 hours from Tucumcari, New Mexico home to Iowa all in one shot.....800 and some odd miles.....this was double that in miles, but I could NOT take double that in time.

I was expecting it to me worse then it was. I was only tired 4 times....each time I stopped for a rest. My first clue I was tired was on the way back home.....as the sun started dipping below the horizon and Im blazing down the SD interstate.....I started seeing weird shit.

I actually hallucinated a road sign turning into a dinosaur and trying to eat me as I rode by. FUCK.....did that just happen. So I pulled off the road for a 20 min power nap.

That was the only time I was concerned that this was a bad idea....Ive never been THAT tired before. The other stops were for "normal" tired behavior and were all uneventful. I must have looked goofy as hell setting in my camp chair next to my motorcycle......it running.....and this cord connecting me to the bike.....but I was warm during my naps. I didnt figure the Vision would have a problem idling for 15 to 20 mins in the cool weather so I could stay warm. It didnt protest.

The trailer was being drug around behind me just in case I decided to call the Iron Butt run off and setup camp.....had the full camp at my disposal. I almost called the Iron Butt run off due to "bitchin scenery" a few times so I could spend another day out there.....figured I could score another day off at work.

I had a great time and despite the time constraint and the long riding hours I had a blast.....and I dont feel that I missed out on anything.

It was fast and dirty....and extremely economical. I think the total cost for fuel, food, sight seeing etc was $175.....not bad for a mini-vacation.

Looks like an excellent ride. Great scenery pics, but c'mon man, no picture of the waitress? Epic fail.

What a sweet bike

Damn that is a nice looking bike. I'm not into that kind of bike normally, but that looks sweet.

Glad you enjoyed the trip. I have some family back that way. I've always wanted to ride that area.

Thanks, the Vision is very distinctive.....you either love it or hate it.

That area is beautiful.....Ive rode in many states and this was one of my favorite rides. I wish I would have had the time to toss out a tent for a couple days and REALLY ride the area.
