My b-day: A lil' dirt, a lil' street, and a lil' camping with k8E

A few weeks ago, my sweet wife and fellow inmate, k8E, asked me what I wanted to do on my birthday weekend. Hmmmm, let me think...RIDE. Motorcycles people, I meant motorcycles .

Flashback: Pops (Phattyre-Phready2) and I have ridden dirtbikes at Wolf Pen Gap on numerous occasions. I'd heard they'd made some improvements to the place since the last time I was there, so that's a possibility. k8E is just learning on her TTR-125L, but I'd heard a few of the main trails were easier now.
Also, while exploring backroads on the Wee around last Fall, I arrived at the Wolf Pen ATV Campgrounds. Hmmm, cool looking place, one of these days...
Finally, I'd ridden the Talimena Scenic Byway last year and wanted k8E to see it as well.

So, I began formulating a plan to make the most out of the weekend. Trailer our dirtbikes and the Vstrom and the camping gear (I know...cheater), set up base camp at Wolf Pen, and thoroughly enjoy the gorgeous Fall weather in Arkansas!

We both managed to sneak out of work early on Friday 10/8; Everything was loaded and ready and we were on the road by 2pm.

We are only about an hour away, but that is still far enough to 'get away from it all'.

This area of Arkansas, deep in the Ouchita Mountains, is apparently hung up on utensils?

I made mention to k8E that we would need to do some "Spooning" in the tent to complete the setup.

You know you are getting going to have fun when these signs dot the back roads!

Notice the dust on the foliage...it's just the beginning!

We made it...no more sitting in a cage until it's time to head home

Thumb We have arrived

Told my hubby he could do whatever he wanted on his B-day. He chose to go here amongst other things. Cool nights and warm days....just right for camping.

This bridge looked a little frail, but the massive size toy totes proved it was capable.

As we entered the campground, it was a true outdoor lovers paradise...wait maybe not a girly girls paradise.

PinIt thought it was pretty cool to have gas and ice on site.

I'm not much on abiding by the rules. Notice Rule #4 (Is dust an issue here?)

Pretty cute cabins. Ac, heater, and two twin beds....why not stay in a tent when the weather is just right.

The camp host was Cedric. He was taking us to see our campsite.

Setting up camp

As Cedric was leading us to our spot, I was looking over his UTV at the nice grassy spots by the river. When he stopped at campsite 'E', I was a little dissappointed.
I think there were 3 blades of grass on the whole thing

To make matters worse, Cedric had just informed me that there was a strict burn ban in effect and let me know in no uncertain terms that the rule was to be followed. Grrrr...camping without fire is just wrong! He did say we could use charcoal in the grill to cook our meals...looks like we'll be cooking all night.

Maybe I was a little spoiled from a recent Colorado trip and one particular campsite up Camp Bird Road:
(Here is that RR if you're in the mood for CO pics galore: Three Stooges Stromin' the San Juans)

Our mounts for this weekend, notice the thick layer of dust on bikes that were nice and clean just an hour ago :

I love riding up and parking next to a tent, nice not having to trailer-up after riding!

Night 1

After a short sunset ride, B-Rad decided to wrestle with the grill

Deep Concentration (see the dust in the air???)

What Fire Ban

More late arrivals Thanks for the layer of dust after our shower

I'm beginning to like this camping thing, even though I feel so dirty

Thumb Our first camp friend

k8E and I threw some hot dogs on the grill. The smell attracted a gold dog.

Little did we know at the time...he would be a regular visitor. I think he wanted something, but I couldn't figure out what it was

Oh...maybe it's k8E's leftovers?

Sho nuff

He was now officially our friend

I think he was part Yellow Lab and part Hound Dog...friendly guy for sure!

We let the fire burn down and retired to the tent...getting a little cold outside. k8E made me bring a little electric heater, so I plugged it in and the tent was nice and cozy. We even had laptop with us, so we watched Date Night in the tent. Who needs a campfire?
