Death Valley Junction - Pix on the way!

I am packed and ready to go for a ride out to Death Valley Junction this weekend! On Friday the 15th I will take off late morning and head to Ridgecrest for the night and meet up with Gogogordy and his wife for a relaxing night and enjoy a few beers. On Saturday morning we will take off sometime and head up Panamint Valley Rd to the 190 East. From there we will make some stops here and there along with stops in Stovepipe Wells and Furnace Creek. Our final destination for Saturday will the Amargosa Opera House & Hotel to meet up with one of Gordy’s friends that is on multi-week road trip with his Vespa GTS. Not sure if we will get to see a show on Saturday night, but we will be putting back a few cold ones! The plan for Sunday is a casual ride home and making it back in one piece.

Here is the SV650 in its standard position the night before a ride:

Sometime Sunday or Monday I will post some ride details and pix!

I would think that the Bud might get warm.

Sounds like a good trip, in the right time of year. Enjoy...

Here we go! A few pics and highlights of the weekend ride!

I took off Friday the 15th around 9am from my place in Rancho Bernardo and made my first stop at Emma Jeans in Victorville for lunch. Lunch was a very nice BLT while hanging out with a Harley rider who was part of the Patriot Guard, and heading down to Oceanside for a service.

The Harley guy gave me some direction for some side roads to take to Ridgecrest where I was meeting up with Gogogordy. I ended up botching the directions up and got a little lost, but not too bad. Even with getting a little lost, I still got in some good scenery.

Then back on track.

As I was rolling into Ridgecrest I spotted a gas station on the right side of the road and as I pulled in I saw Gogogordy and his wife filling up their bikes. Perfect timing!!! We all filled up and I followed them to the Motel 6 for a light night of beer drinking.

And some fine snacks!

We took a walk to Denny’s for dinner and saw this bad ass work truck.

Then some more beers by the pool. Yeah, breaking the rules with glass by the pool!

Saturday morning we went out for a quick bite to eat and then packed up for the day to head to Death Valley Junction via the 190.

One of our stops one way up to the 190, Trona.

About ½ way to the 190 we spotted this guy and an old rusty can.

Shortly after that we spotted 8 more jackasses in the desert. The other 3 were taking pictures.

Another break when we hit the 190 on our way to Stovepipe Wells.

A light lunch was had at Stovepipe Wells.

Then a quick stop at an old borax mine.

Our destination for the day, The Amargosa Opera House & Hotel! We met up with Gordy’s friend, Randy, who was on his 18th day of touring on his 2006 Vespa GTS 250.

We iced down our beers and headed back out to go see Dante’s View.

The Amargosa Opera House & Hotel was a very interesting place to see and stay out…. I would love to go hide out there for a week or so!

Remember those beers in the sink? We got to work on those after we returned from Dante’s View.

A quick walk around before having some dinner at the hotel café.

And another BLT for the trip.

After dinner we somehow scored a private tour of the opera house.

Sunday morning was started off with some grub before we packed and hit the road for home.

A stop in the Mojave Preserve.

Some bikers in the Mojave Preserve.

Roadside stop under a bridge.

A lunch stop was made in 29 Palms for food and gas. Lunch was good and then we headed down the 62 to get on to 10 west. The 10 was brutal because of high winds. We battled it out on the 10 until we got off the freeway to take side roads down to Temecula and San Diego, and to put on some extra gear because it was getting cold. Nothing too exciting after that, I was home within a couple of hours or so after lunch and had the rain dump on me when I got back on to the 15 south in Temecula.

Here is the link to the complete photo album on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/skrans/...7625041035333/

I just noticed I forgot to post one of the most important pictures and just fixed it in the main report... But here it is again just so you know! There are 6 or 7 cans chilling and waiting for our return from Dante's View.

I like your photo from Dantes View. I find it hard to take pictures from many of these high view points because there is really too much to capture in a photo. Putting the dry lake in the middle and framing it with the hills in the foreground gives the photo some symmetry and structure that my pics from Dantes lack. Nicely done

Love stuff like this - open road, interesting sites, good friends. It's been way too long since I've been down through there on a motorcycle. That must be corrected next summer. I'm a real desert hound and love that part of California. I've noted your report because you, like me then and now have a road bike. That obviously alters the complexion of the adventure but it's no less enjoyable.

Thanks for taking me along.

I'm glad you enjoyed RedDog! Great weather, good friends, food, location, and some cold beer at night made for a great weekend of riding. Having a road bike does put some limits on the riding, but still plenty of fun on the roads.

Hope you make it down here for some riding!
