David, wonderful RR!!!! It was easy to read because you used a very viewer friendly pic size, no scrolling back and forth to read the text, thanks for that. Like others have said, it's my dream to get up there some day. But I don't want to do it on my wing, I want a different bike for that ride. I know a wing can do it, but why beat it up if you don't have to. I'm sure I can wing it to Hyder, but THEY say that's not the true Alaska.

What was your total expense for the trip, including gas, food, lodging, tires, etc. if you don't mind saying.

Thanks,
Steve

Yes, a GS1200 or Tenre are the best tools for the job, but if you don't go down the gravel roads, a wing would work well also.

I figure I spent $3000 on this trip. There are cheaper ways to do this, and more expensive ways.

David,

I just finished reading your report. Good job, I appreciate the speadsheet at the end. I've done the same for a similar trip I'm planning for June.

Stop by the next time you come through Lewistown. I live 4 miles out of town as you go towards Winifred. You drove right by my house.

Nice report. I've been up the highway 3 times in my cage and once in 1966 (age 17 then) to Dawson Creek on my Suzuki S-32 twin 150cc 2-smoke with my brother and his bike.

You really captured the greatest feelings of this road trip. Making it on my DR650 is on the bucket list and hope to spend lots of time on the road when I'm retired soon. Hope the economy picks up soon...

Really enjoyed your photos of places I've been, and the ones where I haven't been.

Thanks
Dave

So glad this report came back to the top! Got to read it again. Thanks!

Can you recommend a campsite in Glendive? Google says there are three? My son and I will be looking for a tent site late on June 18. First night on our way to Alaska.

There are two private RV type campgrounds and then Makoshika State park. I recommend the park. Its a little short on amenities (just an out house and campsites with fire rings), but is away from the railroad and interstate.

Let me know when you stop by, I'd love to say hi and show you around if our schedules match up.

David,

Great ride report including a lot of excellent information.
Liked the way you wrapped it up on the last day with the McClelland-Stafford ferry ride.

That was a great combination of really useful facts and figures excellent road pictures ( I would have liked pictures of people you spoke with, like the flagger and the cafe owner and other riders!) and your words gave us a real sense of what you were feeling as you went. Hope you can do another before too long.

I thought you might like that Elkhound. I really need to spend some more time out there this summer.

Conchscooter, I usually don't think to take peoples pics while I'm talking with them.

me too!

YES, thanks for the juicy details about stops, food and FUEL! A trip i'd like to make to, but setting sail from Minneapolis instead. I've got it covered to where you are starting, so this is very very informative, and nice to see the terrain you encountered too...thanks for sharing!

WOW! Just found this RR, haven't yet fully read it, will have to wait till I get home tonight from work. What I've seen so far is very inspiring. One quick question, what type of seat are you running on the F8GS?

Can't wait to get home and finish the RR.
