It Gets More Windy

As we headed towards El Calafate, we passed more and more of these...

I wonder what they mean?

It didn't take us long to figure out. As we approached Lake Argentino, the wind continued to "freshen". Here Kim demonstrates straight line riding while leaning left.

If your bandwidth can accomodate it, use full screen size for better effect. Sorry for the jiggling camera, but I was crabbing into the wind while at the same time trying to ride one handed.

So just how much wind was there? Well check out these pics of LAKE Argentino. Those waves are caused by the wind. This is NOT the ocean, this is a lake. It will give you an idea of the wind.

For an experiment, I asked Kim to lean back into the wind to see how far back she could lean without falling...

This is the international sign meaning that there is a warm tropical breeze around the next corner.

You're riding an F650 with Australian number plates, doing 100kph, it's 14' C and your Spot mysteriously shows up on another continent ?

Geoff,

Don't tell us you've never heard of inter-dimensional motorcycle travel? All you need is a cyclotron, a teaspoon of anti-matter and 3 Pisco Sours.

Piece of cake!

Trust Me Kim!

Well Kim being the ever trusting soul that she is, tried out leaning back into the wind and this video resulted.

It's tough to tell from the video, but she got back to about 25 degrees of backward lean daring and trusting soul that she is.

Her hubby would never have been so daring.

Made It To El Calafate

Ultimately we made it to El Calafate and checked into our hostel.

They even had these cool wagons out front.

Just how big were the wagons? Check this out!

Time To Visit the Perito Moreno Glacier

The following morning it was time to go visit the Perito Moreno Glacier. As we headed out we started to see the beginnings of the glacier.

There were also beautiful mountains and sights framing the way...

all the way to the Perito Moreno Glacier we came upon this...

It was only going to get better from here. Trust us!

Visiting the Perito Moreno Glacier Up Close and Personal

Ultimately we were able to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier up close and personal. There was an excellent board walk walking trail along side the glacier...

Where you could get close to the glacier and get a good overall look at the glacier.

We were there fairly early in the morning and early in our walk, the sun was just beginning to shine at the edge of the glacier.

Not only did we get an early look at the glacier, but we caught a glimpse of this local resident out for her morning constitutional...

She strutted by without an apparent care in the world.

This guy too!

After our brief walk around the glacier, it was time for us to catch a catamaran for a cruise up close to the glacier.

Needless to say, the cruise up close was beautiful. The ice is very blue and and much more vivid when viewed up close. I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Caught this late pic of a berg calving...

Time To Head Back To The Hostel

Before we knew it, it was time to head back to the hostel. But we still had some marvelous sights to catch on the way home.

Heading to Torres Del Paine

The next day was a big day. We were headed to Torres Del Paine National Park. We knew that it was supposed to be beautiful and to top it off, we were going to be... CAMPING for three days.

Yup, us camping. Now I like camping enough, but I'm afraid that Kim does enjoy her hot shower and warm bed each night. Not to mention a non-stinky hubby.

I prefer to call it "manly musky".

Kim perfers to call me Mr. Stinky.

Anyway, we were off and riding and had a short stretch of mountain pavement...

and we were back on the gravel...

with strengthening winds.

It wasn't long before we were at the Argentinian border crossing back into Chile. The winds were really coming up but had still not reached their strongest for the day. How strong were they? Here's a short video taken at the border to give you an idea...

In fact, it was so windy, that when we cleared immigration and customs, the entire border guard exited the building with their cameras and took our pictures waving and giving us the thumbs up as we rode off into the wind. Kind of cool, but a little surreal.

As we rode on, we knew that things were getting better...

A taste of things to come was coming into view.

Torres Del Paine and the Search for Guanacos

We were nearing Torres Del Paine. The most photographed mountains to appear in National Geographic magazine (so I'm told). Why would they be so photographed? I guess we would have to wait and see.

But as we approached, it became evident...

It was so beautiful in fact, that we got all touristy and decided we had to take the obligatory "tourist standing in front of" photos...

No that is not a matt drawing behind Kim, that's the real thing. It was just awesome!
