Ouch. It was 78 degrees here today.

BobZader-
it's normal to have a slight spin even if the clutch lever is pulled in. You may also get the wheel spinning while on a stand even when in neutral.

Your clutch cable has an adjustment. You'll know for certain that you need a new clutch cable if that adjustment is no more or if the clutch starts getting unusual drag and stiffening up. That's a tell tale sign that something is frayed inside the cable housing.

As far as the front wheel noise, is it coming from the calipers? If it is then I'd say you're probably in need of caliper rebuild. The rubber components on the pistons start to deteriorate with time and start sticking. Rebuild kits are cheap and are pretty simple to install.

I dunno why you guys are asking me questions as I don't know nothin' about nothin'.

I did sleep at a holiday inn once.

Seriously though, most of the stuff I know is from banging my head against a wall figuring stuff out over time. (and also having a best friend who's been a life long mechanic helps ) Whatever I know that may help any of you out my garage is always open.

You play AC DC on a bagpipe with flames coming out while pelvic thrusting?
Me thinks that wasn't the link you intended.

I'm headed out Saturday... XR is in pieces, waiting on parts for maintenance so I'm riding my 800XC (very gingerly! still has that new-seat-smell!) out north of Roosevelt Lake and up Cherry Creek Road up towards Devil's Chasm. Idea is a ride-hike-ride... hike up to the indian ruins, relax and eat lunch along one of the creek beds, come back well before sundown.

Route will be out 60 to Superior and Globe, then 188/288 to Cherry Creek Road.

If anyone wants to join me you can meet up with me at the McDonalds at Greenfield and Southern just north of US-60 around 7:30AM. Kickstands up at 8.

I could do that... but riding around in a scotish kilt... might chafe a bit... not to mention it kind of redefines ATGATT.

How far is the hike. I could meet you at Florence jct. Don't want to go into the big city. Oh yeah and stop smelling your seat.

wheels and such

Alright Reidy008 and Cyberdos. Then I'm only half crazy. I'll see if I can take it in to Zen Motorcycle for a look at the front wheel assembly. I trust myself even less around the breaks than I do to tighten my chain. Maybe, if I'm lucky, I can get a 101 in 'this is your motorcycle' and 'it looks like you may want to think about this'. I've got a squeaky drum in the back too.

I want to do a couple of trips this late winter/all spring to prep for a haul to Colorado Springs this summer. Want to make sure the bike is well tended to so it doesn't fold on me mid-trip.

Suggestion

Can you simply pull off the brake caliper and spin the wheel to see if the noise is coming from the hub or the caliper? That should be quick and easy.

Sure, we can pull off and look for bikes around Florence Junction around 8:30 or so. There's a dirt lot on the SE corner of 79/60, where the on-ramp to eastbound 60 is. Meet there?

Hike is maybe 1.5 miles in, 1.5 out. I don't know the rate of climb, I've never been back there before. It is called "Devil's Chasm" though so I imagine it ain't perfectly flat. Those old Salado indians liked to put their cliff dwellings pretty high up the canyons.

Depending on how you access Devil's Chasm, you may have to cross this...

The hike is short, but there are a couple of mild climbs up steep slick rock "waterfalls". Last time I was there, there was a rope to assist climbing up a spot under a boulder. Worth the trip.
