SO much great info on here for a new rider-from engines to accessories-still trying to devour it all...but the best way to learn is to do!-so lets ride!

Great community you guys have here-and SO many amazing ride reports from around the world!

I know the 250 isn't ready to keep up with some of the longer/highway rides but I'd love to tag along for a short trail ride or somethin' one of these days!

Cheers,

Max
My buddy also rides a KLX 250 and he loves it out on the fire roads. I will try to ride on Saturday the 31. Probably hit the 4 peaks loop. Let me know if you are intersted.

Ok I talked with Mil T and for those of us riding up in the morning we will meet up in Payson. We can figure out the place and time later. For anyone who will be leaving later in the day if you have anything that needs to go in the trunk get with me so we can figure out a plan to get it up to Payson.

If anyone is planning on going to Seabees for the GPS clinic I will be there so that would be a good meeting place to drop anything off.

I know Paul, Loren and my self will be able to carry most everything all the way ourselves but I am not sure about everyone else.

This ride is starting to get close

MrGoldfirh,

No I will be riding up but if someone has something that they cannot carry I am sure I can find a way to get it up to Payson.

Plus Death Valley...and rollin' dice in Vegas, and as many non-touristy spots as folks can put me on

But AZ is always my favorite visit out west, and my big bike loves it out there

Tire question

I recently purchased Shinko 705's for my DR650 and have about 1500 miles on them. They feel great on my commute to scottsdale, but I have been avoiding trails that have sand and rocky climbs.

I want to improve my offroad riding, so I am looking at a true 50/50 tire with a lean toward better sand control.

I am looking at:

Dunlop 606
Kenda 270
Conti TKC 80

What would be my best bet?

Thanks for any local advice.

Tires

The 606 will be the best off road but the worst on road and mileage wise.

You might also want to consider the Pirelli MT21's
The Kenda 270's are very good, granted I have never really run in a lot of sand....
I have used both on my XR650L. The Pirelli is labelled as a 90/10 (Off/On) where the Kenda is 50/50.
I have been impressed with the Kenda in regards to price, performance and longevity....my 2 cents anyway...

Buy a second set of rims and put off road tires on them.

If I had a choice on my F650 I would take the Shinko 705 off and run a TKC80. I would leave the Shinko on the rear until it burned out. The 705 on the rear isn't bad at all it is the front that is a real deal changer. The problem with my F650 is that it has an 18" front wheel.

I'll throw some thoughts in here.

I am on my second set of Shinko 705's on my KLR. I think they do pretty well on and off road as long as you don't have the expectation that they are going to be knobbies off road. The only issue I have had with them is that the front tire I have on now "shudders" once I get over an indicated 70 mph. I tried putting some dyna beads in the front tire, but there is some goopy sticky stuff in the valve stem that keeps the beads from flowing into the tube. I might take some rubbing alcohol and some qtips and try and clean it up and try again before I try the dyna beads again. Anyways, I got close to 10K miles on my last rear 705 and more than 10K on the last front. With that said, I may try a different tire once these wear out if I can't get the front tire to stop shuddering at speed. It's not a bad shudder, but it's there. I also like the 705's because they give me enough traction that I can take them off the tarmac yet they feel enough like a road tire that it lets me commute to work everyday.

All,

I just heard from Mil T and do to family commitments he is not going to be able to make the trip up with us this time. I did promise that there would be a good ride report to see when we return.

I'm with Drew. The 606 is the best off-road and decent on-road. I've run it on both the SE and the XR. The TKC is better on-road and decent off-road. Never owned a Kenda. I'm assuming we are talking about front tires here. The SE will shred a 606 rear in a day. The Heidenau K60 works great on the back and lasts a long time.

Of course YMMV and advice is worth what you pay for it.

Do you know anyone that has an extra set of rims laying around?

Maybe he could store them in my garage instead of his

Thank you for all of the replies. I am planning on going to Zen and seeing what Dillon has to offer. He said that he has a bunch of tires right now that I could take a look at.
