I want to improve my offroad riding, so I am looking at a true 50/50 tire with a lean toward better sand control.

I am looking at:

Dunlop 606
Kenda 270
Conti TKC 80

What would be my best bet?

Thanks for any local advice.

I'm with Drew. The 606 is the best off-road and decent on-road. I've run it on both the SE and the XR. The TKC is better on-road and decent off-road. Never owned a Kenda. I'm assuming we are talking about front tires here. The SE will shred a 606 rear in a day. The Heidenau K60 works great on the back and lasts a long time.

Of course YMMV and advice is worth what you pay for it.

Do you know anyone that has an extra set of rims laying around?

Maybe he could store them in my garage instead of his

Thank you for all of the replies. I am planning on going to Zen and seeing what Dillon has to offer. He said that he has a bunch of tires right now that I could take a look at.

18 inch front? I just installed a set of TKC80's front and back, I believe my front was a 19 inch wheel if I'm not mistaken.

I have a 1997 F650 Funduro. It was originally a Strada model so it had an 18" front wheel and factory lowered. I changed out the suspension and it has as much clearance as the standard modern GS now, but I never bought the front wheel. The KLR is so much better off road and gets 15mpg better on the highway I kinda lost interest in the bike.

Xtra wheels are way to go

I bought a second set of wheels off ebay for my XR-L. Put knobs with rim locks on them and DS tires without rim locks on the better set. Didn't bother balancing the DS set, can't tell the difference

On the little bike rides I put on the knobbies, on the big bike rides I put on the DS tires and am good to go. On the rides where they plan to push, pull, tug or lift bikes past obstacles, I get out my street bike and go for a different ride on that!

Refokus and I were comparing notes on sunday. We both have IRC DS tires front and rear right now. We both like the back tire, but not the front. Will try something else up front next time.

Their is a set of DR-650 Wheels and tires on craigs list PHX for $650. Don't know if that's a good deal or not.

Probably not such a good deal. Watch ebay and CL and ADV flea market. I think I paid $125 for the front, including shipping with a pretty good tire on it I think I paid $150 for the rear, incl shipping, with a good sprocket still on it. Each was complete with disc etc. and in reasonably good shape.

You may be able to get away with a decent DS tire up front and just switch the rears back and forth, thus needing only one extra wheel. If I had it to do over, that is what I'd do. I only change the front when I know I'm gonna be thrashing against alot of rocks!

Watch the ads, something will turn up.

Julio, tell us more! Is it ready to ride?

Forgot to mention, if you ride to the GPS class given by cyberdos, you can park your bike inside the air conditioning!

Still is! 10:00 at 306 south river drive in Tempe. After the class, I'll be able to insert a google map of it here.
