Checking out the house in Heber, AZ...sorta

That was the plan. We were going to go check on Wade's house up in Heber via Young. Joining this plan was our buddy Mike. The three amigos met up at the Cheveron in Florence in the morning.

Wade organized the ride but I always have to add a special "cyberdos bonus loop" twist to every ride. So I asked if it was OK to deviate from the initial paved track up to Superior and take a little bit of dirt on the way there instead.

They obliged.

They should know me by now and should have said no.

Headed down E Price road which is a really nice graded dirt road that bends along the perimeter of some ranches. We then got to this gate.

I'm not sure what road this is.

I grabbed it from google earth as a trail but it's not labeled. there was some sort of boy scout jamboree something or other.

We ran up on a whole buncha scouts but we just kept on chuggin along.

The road was really nice.

Wade.

Mike.

We banked a right from unknown trail onto Cottonwood Canyon Road which is a very well known road in the area. I have traveled through here many times and knew it was an easy ride which is why I proposed it rather than the pavement. I know it wouldn't take up too much of our time traveling through it.

Of course that was until we came upon a locked gate. here's a satellite image of the spot. The red and blue are the markings of where the gates were. Unfortunately, the ranch has been bought by someone who put up the gates which deny travel on this main road!

It is a sliver of private land surrounded by BLM.

There are a few different agencies right now trying to mitigate the situation with the rancher and get the gates open again. It sucks and we were forced to turn back around and head west toward the pavement again. It really added a bunch of time to the ride which was already scheduled for a ton of miles.

Sorry about that one guys.

A quick stop for gas and we were moving along nicely up the 188 towards Desert to Tall Pines Hwy.

Make our way up the 288.

and take a break up at an overlook. Roosevelt Lake down at the bottom.

Wade, peeing on something beautiful.

Found this up there while looking around.

Then kept it moving. The 288 eventually turns into dirt. It's a smooth dirt mega highway.

in which you could easily get distracted and fall right over a cliff.

Oh so close. I bet that person had to chenger their underwear after that.

After some high speed runs up the 288 we arrive at Antlers for lunch.

Badass RAZR 1k there.

After lunch we knew we were never going to make it up to Heber in time so again I suggested a route (yeah, they fell for it twice) that would take us down FR202 and then the 203 through the easy parts of Cherry Creek Road (or so I thought). But first we needed to gas up. Both Wade's DR650 and mine still have stock tanks and we were really pushing the envelope if we continued on without gassing up at Young. There are no other gas stations from there down to Globe/Miami and we had already traveled about 50 something miles since the last gas stop.

So as we were gassing up we met an old couple who were in their jeep and asked where we were headed. We chit chatted a bit about routes and they told us that going up and over the 202/203 was going to be a long day ride.

Bummer. I was looking forward to riding that since I did the Mobius 11 trip with my friends Dave and Francine. Dingweeds told me about the 202/203 and I had put it off this long. But since it was getting late I figured I better heed the advice of the locals and take the route they said was shorter.

Shorter it was. But not by much. They told us to take the 288 back down and make a left at Board tree Saddle.

And that's where the fun began.

unbeknown to us we would be heading straight down the infamous Cherry Creek Road. The entire length of it. There are easy parts of Cherry Creek which is what I was hoping to connect with the 202/ 202A but with this detour provided to us by the lovely old couple in their jeep, we'd be venturing into the whole damned, rocky-mess full of it.

The good thing is that Mike and Wade are both excellent riders. and we would be treated to some great scenery.

I'm sure Mike has better pics. But it was rather nice and not really as bad as other's stories have made it out to be. This stretch is actually part of the Arizona Back Country Discovery Route. The one with an easy alternative (288). We took the tough one. I'm glad we did.

It was a gorgeous day and we had a great time but I kept telling the guys that the road would smooth out and it didn't, making me look bad, for a long while.

Eventually we made our way through the rough parts were treated to the smooth side of Cherry Creek as the sun was starting to set. It made for some great light while riding down the canyon.

and an excellent Cherry Creek on the top to the day.

Gates, damn gates

We discussed that very gate at the single track summit today as part of the access discussion. Work in progress I believe.

Great RR 'dos!
