An Afternoon in Canterbury

The 23rd October, day one of a holiday weekend in NZ, and a beautiful day to boot. It seemed like a good plan to head for the hills, take some dusty roads, and go the long way for a coffee at the Yello Shack. I hadn't been to Manuka Point for a couple of years. Manuka Point is an isolated farm (ranch) at the head of the Rakaia Valley. The Rakaia Valley looks like this:

Towards the end of the road, these double hills are on a farm called , erm, the Double Hill Run:

Halfway up the valley, and on the other side, you can see these - penstocks for the oldest hydro-electric scheme in NZ, the Lake Coleridge power station:

Manuka Point is on the other side of the river. 15 years ago, members of the Shadowjack whanau farmed here:

Manuka Point is one the other side of the Rakaia River - there is no road, or bridge to the homestead, so you need a very capable 4WD or helicopter.

And, lunch:

After riding up one side of the valley, I realised I may have to get shot of the actual power station - so, here we are, on the other side of the valley:

Any day in the mountains of Canterbury is improved to the point of perfection with the sighting of one these - a kea, emblematic of the mountains:

Sorry, I was so hungry by the time I got to Springfield, that the coffee and chicken, brie, and cranberry panini didn't last long enough to be photographed.

Thanks for the comments.
On the day, the sky was hazy as all get out - I am going to have to work out how/if to get the Canon S5iS to counter the haze.
Otherwise, there was no wind, unusual at this time of year, just dust hanging in the air. Great day out.
