I'm looking for some advice here people.On a recent bike trip to austin to see my son ELEKTRON the missouri state highway patrol in lebonon county gave me a speeding ticket for going 98mph in a 70 mph zone.I am sure i wasnt going that fast but i thought to myself,"hey, no problem, I'll pay the ticket and that will be that" Now the problem. I must appear in court? The clerk of the court tells me I must appear and should hire a lawyer.The lawyer says i pay him 150 bones,appear in court,and I may just get a fine plus court costs.Then again i may get a fine, court costs, and community service in lebonon county missouri. This could be a big hassle. Should i hire a lawyer? Should i go it alone? I wouldn't mind paying the lawer if i didnt have to go all the way down there but to pay him and go myself too? Anybody got any experience with this type ticket? It was dark rainy and semi heavy traffic.I couldnt have been going that fast. Could I? And i thought their were enough trucks on the road to hide me from the radar!

You need to research the code section (charge on summons) and see if it is reckless driving or simply speeding. The next step is to find out if you can take a driver improvement (what ever that state call it) class. If you can, contact the clerk of the court (you or attorney) and have the case moved to the troopers next date. Show up with your proof of course completion in hand and tell the judge you where hauling ass but did not realize you where twisting that hard and respectfully request it be reduced in lieu of course completion. Do a rain dance, build an alter to criminal justice and cross everything you can cross!

can't follow you there man, except for the rain dance part that makes perfect sense.

A lot of rural counties have their own "methodology" the real law be damned. If it is a rural county the "judge" may not even be a lawyer so the actual law may get you nowhere. Start calling some local lawyers in the county of the ticket and the next county over in each direction and work out from that.

Out state stuff may as well happen on the moon for all know about it so talk to a local guy and work out from that.

I agree. The lawyers know the clerks and clerks know the lawyers. The judge likes when you take it seriously enough to get a lawyer. They like to see you sweat. Gotta get a lawyer. $150, thats a sweet deal but go local like they said. I had a little mishap her in IL and paid closer to...gulp...500. he got me out big time though. Dropped 2 major tickets and got a $50 illegal lane change fine and had to take "the class". BTW...he knew the clerk.

Might want to drop by Stuntrider.com and ask them. They get lots of tickets.

You're basicly screwed. The Troopers are state, but all tickets go through the county. Get the local legal help.

Did a little searching there isn't a Lebanon County in MO. There is the town of Lebanon in Leclede County. Give Glenda Mott a call, she's the Clerk of Courts.

I'd call him also -- in most cases, they are willing to deal -- all he really wants is your money. Avoid the school thing if you can -- big waste of time.

Right now, I'm freezing my butt off in KC. Airplane parts are keeping me in town for now. I'm kind of waiting to see just how freaking cold it's going to be in January. I know, it won't make any difference. I might as well commit to this silliness. I will be hauling the bike, not riding, unless unseasonably warm that weekend.

me too. I'm harleying my F650. I will be on straight Tourances, no screws so at least now I have an excuse for dropping it.

I agree with kfsinc, all they want is your money. Had the same thing happen to me several years ago; got a lawyer in KC who contacted the court, plead out to a broken tail light lens, and paid a hefty fine. The bottom line is no points and no court appearance. I would give you the name of the lawyer, but he probably doesn't want the publicity.

I've experienced this before, too.

It's been a well known speed-trap/wallet-buster for years.

My first Speeding ticket ever, was in Lebanon, MO. It was 1983, and I was in my 1982 Mercury Capri RS. I was "escorted" (about 5-10 miles) to the Courthouse and they blocked my car in and wouldnt allow it to leave, until I paid my fine. They literaly had a Deputy "sitting" on my car! I was returning from my sister's house in St Louis back to Oklahoma at the time. It was early, before the banks opened, I waited about an hour to get a Cashiers Check (thats all they would accept, claiming I was out of state) from the local bank. I had some words for the Deputy and ended up snapping a couple of photos, before he got off my car. It was incredible! I still cant believe how backwoods the LEO's were there.

They claimed I was doing 82 mph in a 65 mph zone on I-35, complete hogwash and I, being a young punk, let them know it.

To this day I cringe when I drive through Lebanon, MO, I feel your pain.

I can't offer much advice on the ticket matter. It seems you could pay a local Attorney $150.00 to get the matter deferred, but based on my experience 20 years ago, I wouldnt trust them to get it right.
