Western Ozarks dual-sport quick weekend

Oct 22-23 rides, trailered the WR250R from Baotn Rouge to Turner Bend Store (just south of Cass) on SR23 in the Ozark National Forest. At Turner you can get great sandwiches, maps, gas, campsite, hot showers, beer, local wine, etc.

Plan was to explore dirt roads west of 23 one day (including the Millcreek ATV trails), and east of 23 the other day, with lunch at Oark General Store.

Day 1: What I came for

One of several unmarked ATV trails somewhere along NFR1501

Somewhere along NFR1505 on the way to White Rock

ON NFR1007 with views of White Rock in the back

Mingling with some of the locals

I eventually found Mill Creek ATV trails late in the afternoon. Randomly chose the south portion of the Blue Trail and did about 10 miles of it before taking a short cut back to camp, tired. Fairly rough for a novice like me. Only crashed once.

$8 camp fee includes the hot showers...can't beat that price. Dinner back at Turner Bend:

Day 2:

Took SR 23 & 215 to NFR 1504-1508-1404, explored several others plus some dead ends and eventually made my way to Oark through NF roads.

Oark Genral Store: I had their Buttermilk Pie and a glass of milk first. The best. And then the Cheeseburger/fries/coke, and a taste of their pulled pork. Again, the best. Plus gas. Service was great and the owner's dad was supernice. He told me the store relies on bikers for over 50% of the sales. All word of mouth. They always have gas for bikers, even if their main pump is out, they keep extra in the back for bikers. They certainly cater to us. Worth including in your itinerary if you're riding in the area.

Oark General Store also owns a cabin in the national forest which I rode by on my way back to Turner. Brand new, with hot water, electricity, kitchen, etc. Call ahead for reservations 479.292.3351.

On the way back to Turner I explored additional NFR's north of 215 trying to avoid the same roads I took on the way to Oark. Again, several dead ends, all worth taking.

I beat the rain all weekend, but it poured for the last hour...Back inside the tent after Turner Bend's turkey sandwich and beer, pretending to read on my Kindle

Homesick

Makes me homesick looking at these. I rode these all my younger days and didn't know how good I had it. Great RR. We are leaving for Big Bend tomorrow if you want to join.

Super nice. I enjoyed it when I was out that way.

Thanks for the update on the rental cabin.

EJ,

Good intel on Oark Store and cabin. Thanks.

Also consider the Choctaw Nation Trail in SE Oklahoma for an extra day of trail riding. It's not too far from the Ozarks.
