What's to see around the New River Gorge area?

I've got a few days off coming up and thought I would run up to WV and check out the gorge and general area. Tell me about it...........

Check out the train depot in Thurmond. Depending on the bike Buery Mountain Road would be fun, 2-up on a Strom was more like work. Stay at Ray's campground in Hico at the intersection of 60 and 19. It's a nice kept campground with showers for 7 or 8 bucks a night. Backus Mountain Road from RT 41 over to the town of Meadow Bridge is a fun twisty paved road. At the top of the mountain is Red Spring, where my family settled in the 1800's and probably where they'll plant me one day.

All good advice from H14.

I'm just a few miles south of the Gorge Bridge, I can show you the places H14 mentioned and a few others as long as you don't mind back roads.

If you are interested, just PM me for contact information.

Oh, gawd. Tudor's Biscuit World... Too many Gauley Fests when I paddled whitewater kayaks in the nineties but Tudor's was a trip highlight.

There is also one in Oak Hill now but it's not open in the evenings.

The Hinton area is fun, a lot of good roads around there. Sandstone Falls is a good place on the river and if you take Rt. 20 out of Hinton there's an overlook above the falls. Continue on 20 to I64 and it's about 6 miles to Grandview Park for fabulous views down into the Gorge. In the Park there are several overlooks, don't miss the last one Turkey Spur I believe it's called.

I rode there several years ago w/ my brother. This was his trip and he had the route all layed out. I basically just followed along generally not having any real clue of where we were...

But lots of great twisty roads in the area. The only one I remember was the "old road" that crosses New River Gorge. Make sure you hit that when you see the actual bridge.

I also have this weekend and all next week off, so I am planning on a back-trail ride out to The Gorge.

Thanks for the tips, Kevin.

While you're in the area you might as well ride up to Hacker Valley and stop in at Rellas for some vittles and a piece of pie.
