pyg rydr,
if you have any interest in doing this sometime in the spring,
I would probably be up for a ride.
maybe we can get some of the other tvr folks to join in.

Bykemeister,
Yeah, I ride sections of the BRT throughout the year. This year-the single Iron Mtn Single Track Trail/Mt Roger sections, Walker Mtn/Hogback Ridge/sections, Mtn Lake/Tub Run/Potts Mtn and other sections north.
When you return from Florida, we can hit some sections....

Thanks,

Tom

I usually ride just sections that are part of the Blue Ridge Trail. My best estimate on a ride from Damascus to say paint bank or Newcastle will be probably 3 days. There are some very challenging sections for dual-sport riding. Lots of fun riding for these sections.

Thanks for the reply. I want to base out of Wytheville and ride to Damascus and back on one day and then do Walker Mountain Rd, 738, Hogback Mountain and Round Mountain then back to Wytheville on the second day. I was up there on my streetbike a couple of months ago and rode the perimeter of the whole thing and it looked do-able. Most of what I want to do is part of the BRT except for the part that connects me from Carnot to Hogback Mountain on the second day. I hope to get up early in the spring and ride it, then map it out for a few friends of mine to ride later in the year. Looks like fun!

Thanks,

Tom

Forgive me if this has already been asked but how gnarly is this? Could it be done on a tiger 800xc?

Like other dual sport adventures it depends a great deal on how wet it is. Lots of rain makes the mud bogs (particularly on Hogback!) a factor. A physically strong rider can do most of this area on a big bike. I know some have done Iron Mtn Trail on big beemers but personally I wouldn't advise a big bike there.

OFWG,

Here's a link to a rather long, but interesting video of the Iron Mountain portion out of Damascus. Don't know if you've seen it, or not. Scroll about halfway down and you'll see the video insert.

Don't know your level of ability but you better be good to do it all on that bike. We had a 990, a V-strom, a WRR, a XT250, and 2 PD GS's, all old but experienced riders. We skipped very little, we could have done it all but for the big bikes there were places that it was not fun. It is a great ride and you can have a good time on moct of it with that bike.

The way we did it the whole thing was a 1000 mile loop, we figured 7 days, we didn't get it done, but close. We where not in a hurry, eating, camping, drinking and having a good time. On a mission we could have got it done.

I ride a 800XC and have ridden many sections of the BRT on my 800, 650 and 250. I would not ride some BRT sections on my 800XC. I suggest a smaller bike. And you will have more fun!

Are you camping or hoteling?

Best guess 3/4 days...

Cool vid...way over my head. I don't think I could walk that trail, much less ride it.
