Getting ready to leave for this trip. I'll pick up the route from I-77 and go clockwise into Damascus and crash for the night. Meeting three guys there in the morning and then the fun really starts.

Eek Epic flail

I jumped on the BRT in Damascus Saturday morning. Or rather it jumped on me!! The sign said open to hikers, mt bikes, horses, and motorcycles year round.
What it didn't say was that a loaded KLR with stock suspension with a fairly skilled 230 # rider would probably get his ass handed too him. No fault but my own. If you are attempting this on a bigger bike don't go alone.
This is an awesome project and I thank error cooled for his efforts. I would love to attempt this on a more off-road capable bike. Still would be a challenge for me. Good luck guys, I've got an oil leak to check, could have something to do with my broken skid plate. Lots of big loose rocks.
Beartree campground is a nice NFS campground, $22/nt but I don't mind supporting the park system. It's just a few minutes from Damascus.
Wish I had a better ride report.

Bummer of an experience but wise words. There is a bypass provided to avoid Iron Mountain. The majority of the BRT is not nearly as technical.

From my email primer on the route that goes out with the tracks - emphasis in bold.

Quote:
I designed the route to heavily skew towards scenic and off pavement riding. There are roads that may be impassable to those with little off road skill or on bikes that are too large for the route. The ideal bike is a DRZ400, WR250R, DR650, KTM690 or similar.
…….

Put simply - I take no responsibility if you head out on your GSA1200 with slicks and get stuck on a ridge line overnight with out provisions :) Seriously – light is right for this ride – leave the beasts at home.

Forest Roads / Trails that I would be especially mindful of are:
Iron Mountain Trail 301 (Ridgeline Single Track, steep and off camber in parts)
Have seen the requests rolling in - will catch up this week. If your PM has no email I have no way of getting the files to you.. just FYI.

was approached by the owner of the house at Ramsey/Marble Valley by the bridge on Friday and she complained about riders traveling way too fast on the roads, and remarked that she was nearly hit head on recently by a rider that missed a corner and ended up in her lane. i don't know if the guys were BRT riders or not.

we only saw one vehicle in 100 miles of gravel Friday, but if a rider gets complacent or racy and doesn't exercise lane discipline, he'll be going for a helicopter ride...or worse.

Shoe creek is challenging on a big bike too. Fun, but challenging. Especially in the rain.
