It wasn't me, but coincidentally the same bike. I hope to get up there again soon though so I'll see you soon enough.

Access to Michaux

Do you need to purchase a "pass" (day use or annual) to ride here? Or is it just open to those willing to take on the adventure?

Its all stone/dirt roads (no trails), and they are free and open to any tagged vehicle. (you will see cars, pickups, etc. Even saw a 1/2 track from WW2 up there once)

But no dirt bikes or 4 wheelers. Plus there is a big section of ATV trails (for 4 wheelers only), which is absolutely off limites for your motorcycle.

I just moved here and that is really baffling to me. Can someone explain the no motorcycles on ATV trails rule to me?

Did you ever see that episode of Super Friends where they travel to Bizarro World and all the superheros are the bad guys?

It also varies with time of year, and particular trail/road.

ATV's use low pressure tires with wide tread. larger contact patch = less lbs per sq inch on the ground which in theory causes less erosion. Motorcycles run a thin tire and will erode more earth when spinning, especially at the tops of hills.

Plus there is that whole "renegade" thing that comes with dirt bikes, but from what I have seen, several bad apples have earned that title for us. .

Then there is the lobbyist part. Denny can explain it better then me, he has spend most of his life working on this.

Sounds like a plan! I'm concentrating on Cumberland County, and working in Basecamp.

Carlisle (Middlesex)
Today I'm venturing out with an AAA SE PA map strapped to the tank bag and a pink highlighter (backed up by the GPS) for an all-day tour of Cumberland County to confirm unpaved roads.

Alas, I am embarrassed to admit that Cumberland County has done a great job paving just about every lane in the valley except for approach roads to the state forests. I'm sitting at the Pine Grove Furnace camp store crossing off almost every road west of Carlisle that Garmin maps indicated were probably unpaved. Many were paved; most were private farm driveways. A couple must have been long abandoned rights-of-way. Game lands are about it for valley unpaved roads. I started having luck in the Newburg area until I realized I had strayed west into Franklin County, and I had to draw the line so I could finish western Cumberland County.

More road hunting later. For now, I'm gonna ride Michaux for a while.

Denny, is this a gas station or something? I might be up with the bike this week (if work allows).
Maybe I could just follow you down since you are my neighbor :). I will know Wed if I was able to come up.
