Question F650GS forks

First, I know the best would be to upgrade to something else.
My bike got water in one leg and rusted the inside of the tube.
I have it out and when I push on the spring I can tell it is gritty up in there.
I would like to try and clean it up and use it.

How does it come apart? Is the tube a sealed unit?

My bike is a 2003 F650GS

No the forks are not a sealed unit yes you can take them apart and clean them out. make sure to use new seals and dust caps.

lets see if I understand.
I take off the plastic cap, and I push down on what I thought was a solid end of the tube. That should reveal a snap ring, then remove the ring and release the "piston" and the spring will come out the top.
