Thanks
Wow bro, I was going to call you about the plans for the trip. I set up my route and trip plans; wanted to discuss some items such as hotel vs camping blah blah blah. I'll be there at 7 AM.

looks like Water Street in St. John's is the oldest street in North America.
Should make a decent photo op with the bike.....

Does anyone know much about doing the trans lab trip in mid to late September?

I'm trying to do some last minute planning, schedule is a little restricting hence the late departure date.

Also riding solo, happy to pair up with anyone else who is interested. Leaving from western Mass.

Thanks, and great thread!

I've done it in early September, and I feel that's the best month to do it. From what I've heard from locals in both Labrador and Newfoundland, September tends to be the nicest month weather-wise, as long as you don't mind cool temps. There's a good amount of sunshine, and the bugs are finished for the season.

Definitely bring electrics though -- it can get chilly. Personally, I'd much rather ride in 45 degree temps with the electric vest going than in 85 degree temps, but YMMV... Also, be aware that overnight lows can and will drop below freezing, so if you're camping, bring an adequate sleeping bag.

Might be early, but plausible! Depends on how deadlines at work pan out. I'll know more soon.

Glad to hear that others will be out there later in the year.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Update and Question

SMIB riders - ordered EZPASS and 250 SMIB TRANS-LABHWY 2011 Stickers. Should be here next week.

Still researching and making reservations where I can. What is the cost of the ferry to Baie-Comeau, Quebec and can I set up reservations? What about schedule and time to cross?

Good to go. That means we will be riding RT138. My decedent (Pierre LaBrecque) came over from Normandy to Saint-Laurent-de-l'Île-d'Orléans, QC, Canada in 1659. My family lived there until my Pepe came south for work. I might take a 30 minute detour to visit the site (Now a Golf Course) to get a picture.

Campsites and Things To See

I took Blaster's itinerary from the first page and used that to do some research on camp sites and things to see (but mostly campsites).
I did some research online to make sure the campsites don't suck. I'll keep editing this list. The provincial parks are pretty good. They all seem good amenities.
I'll probably print out a list for the trip. I believe all of this is in the free travel guide, but I have to double check. Looks like we will be able to do a lot of beach camping.
Don't get excited --it will be cold....

Don't worry about Baie-Comeau too much since it really is just a stop for gas and supplies...the goal for day 2 is Manic 5 for some camping and then the start of Day 3 will be gravel. woo hoo gravel!

Also if we want to spend a day or two roaming around Gros Morne there are quite a few cabins in the area...makes it nice to dump the stuff and explore a bit. The KOA seems to be booked a lot.

If we take the fastest route to get as far as quick as we can then we will most certainly run into some tolls. I don't need anything else researched...I am just winging it at this point in the game. Dana is still looking up some stuff.
