South America for 3 months...

Dear All,

Wish it wuz me... but alas! 'tis my Buddy who is planning to ride with 2 or 3 others to and through South America early in 2011.

His immediate question is this:

What bike?

The idea is to purchase there, and either donate them afterwards to a worthy cause or sell 'em.

200 class? 2T or 4T? 450/500 class?

Obviously, the ability to pack a load is very important, and my friend is certainly not a small person. 3 months on an ill-=fitting bike would be most unenjoyable, I would think.

So, is there some wisdom for us on this Forum, with regard to the immediate issue? Other assistance and advice would be most appreciated too.

Kind regards,
RobG
Republic of South Africa.

Sounds interesting. Why not get on the computer and investigate what bikes are sold there. That would narrow things down a bit.

Yup, that is certainly a good plan...

Please, folks, your input is welcomed and appreciated.

Best figure a way to buy a travel bike already set up from another traveler headed home. Buenos Aires is good for this ... contact Dakar motors.

As useless as it is for most anything ... the classifieds over on HUBB (Horizon's Unlimited) list many bikes for sale. Most are well set up. Lots of KLR650's, DR650's in the $3000 to $5000 USD range.

Colombia is also a good place to buy a bike. Lots of travelers pass through and sell off their bikes. You're buddies need to do their own research. A 200cc Chinese bike could work but a 650 dual sport is much preferred.

Go Chinese?

Thank you for this info, AG. I have suggested to Jock that he register on the Forum himself, which will make things a whole lot easier.

Regarding Chinese bikes... 1niteowl posted a fantastic Ride Report about his and his wife's adventure to China and Russia, riding 200 or 250 bikes bought right there on the street in Whereva... they lasted OK, and were sold at the border.

I do think though, that something stronger and more reliable would be my choice - I ride a F650GS.

Thanks, Guys... this will be an interesting adventure unfolding..!
