Chippendales

He was said to have the body of a Chippendale, although no one knew where he kept it.

24.06.2010 - Departure from Finland

My three weeks of vacation with the family was about to come to an end. We had been busy with various work at our summer cottage and meeting friends and relatives. I had done my best to discuss the trip with the girls trying to make them comfortable with my travel and absence for the rest of summer. Summer in Finland is really great time filled with lots of activities so I reckoned that they would not miss me for long. They had their own map of Russia on the cottage wall where they could follow the progress of my travel.

On Wednesday 23rd of June we had a “good luck” party together with the family, my parents and two of my many aunts. My wife and kids gave me some very nice gifts for the trip. A superlightweight aluminium alloy camping cutlery set, a combined outdoor humid-proof salt & pepper shaker and a mosquito hat. Last but not least, I got a package of my very special favourite cookies, “farmer’s bread”, from the local bakery http://www.sodermansbageri.com/seindex.html (they will be surprised to get their first / so many hits from abroad now…).

Thursday 24th of June it was time to say goodbye. I had the noon flight to Helsinki from the small provincial airport in Kruunupyy. Although we had talked about the trip and my return end of August, the kids started crying and after a while all of us were very “emotional”. The others at the airport probably thought that the foreign father is being deported. At this stage I wondered what I am doing to my family and whether it was right to go on this trip. Right or wrong, I hugged my family and went through the safety check and could see my red-eyed family on the other side of the glass wall.

From Helsinki I had a direct flight to Seoul in Korea. Often when flying from Europe to Asia or vice versa I have been looking down over Russia and Mongolia thinking about how it would be to do the trip on land. Well, I was about to find out very soon.

I arrived at Seoul Incheon airport in the morning Friday 25th of June and transferred to the Seoul Gimpo airport for my Busan flight. In the early afternoon I arrived in Busan Haeundae after some 20 hours of travel. My successor at work, Eero, whom I know since a number of years, had offered me to stay at his place for the last days before departure. The bike was in the garage as I left it almost a month ago and I rode it to BMW Busan to get started with the final bike preparation and service.

Later in the evening I had the honour to be invited as a guest to the management team dinner of my former company. We had excellent Korean barbeque. Many thanks for the invitation and good luck with future business!

I was exhausted after a long travel and the reasonable amount of soju made me sleep like a baby. No problems with jet lag this time.

Can't wait for more of this. Central Asia is to me a dream destination. Guess I will just have to live it vicariously.
