Talking Ontario Ride 2011 Memorial Day

***EDIT - after the ride***

The ride and the weekend was fantastic. I think everyone had a great time. I know that I did. Thank you Deadly99, Juames, Emmbeedee, and Dresda for all of your assistance with this event. Many thanks to the companies that supported the event with donated prizes: MAX BMW, Whitehorse Gear, Neduro's Dual Sport Riding Techniques, Doubletake Mirror, EnduroStar, Twisted Throttle.

Here is a taste of the weekend:

My photos are on SmugMug.

Original post:

Some of you will remember this great ride in 2006.

I propose that we do a ride again over Memorial Day weekend 2011!

Here is the general layout:
Many thanks to GISDOOD for creating the maps.

The ride will start Friday morning from Richmond, Ontario. This town is just west of Ottawa. I plan on getting to Richmond from New Hampshire Thursday. Some options might be to stay near Ottawa or even inside the US and make the short ride to the meeting place Friday. For the Thursday night, I have booked myself a room at the Days Inn, Bells Corners, Ontario. There's an Irish pub next door to the hotel. :~) Anyone else coming up the day before might want to book a room, too.

There will be opportunities for gas along the trail, but expect a required range of 120 miles.

Thursday 26 May 2011
Get yourself near to the Richmond, ON area. I will stay in Bells Corners, OT on Thursday night. I'll be riding from Southern New Hampshire through Vermont and the Adirondacks.

The Days Inn at Bells Corners may be a decent choice for Thursday night.

Friday
The meeting location is behind the hockey arena at 6095 Perth St, Richmond, Ontario at the corner of Huntley Road and Perth Street. Please show up fully fueled and ready to go. We will be departing at 9 am; most folks will show up between 7-8 am. Rider meeting at 08:30.00.

Bring something for your lunch on the trail.

Three optional "technical sections" on Friday. People can choose to stay on the main route or take these other routes that will be more challenging. Big, heavy bikes loaded with gear might want to wait until Saturday to really challenge themselves. Smaller bikes will be able to tackle these sections more easily.

A slower paced ride is expected to be about eight hours. So enjoy the scenery, take some photo's, have fun. If we are broken up into groups, we will meet halfway through the day for a trail lunch (waypoints on gps file). Pack a lunch so that you have it on the trail.

Camping Friday is at a lake shore campground. It is a commercial campground, not on Crown land as previously stated. The campground is remote and on a lake shore. $12 per person and will have some facilities.

Approximate ride distance Friday is 220 miles.

Saturday

Depart at 08:00, packed and ready to go.
The morning is a short run of about 2-3 hours for the main route, add an hour or two if you choose to do the technical section.
Technical section is one long hydro line (power-lines to the US folks); mostly easy but probably lots of water crossings and one rocky decent.

Meet at Silent Lake Provincial Campground for lunch and to drop the gear from the bikes.

The afternoon has one fun optional section that we can run without the bikes loaded up with gear. It will be a big loop back to the campground.
Approximate ride time is 3-4 hours for main route. Add an hour to two for tech sections depending on ability and water levels. We should have a good idea on water based on day before.

The loop goes through a town 20 minutes before getting back to the campground. Groceries and/or stop for dinner, pick up beer, etc. can be done here as we are getting back to camp. There is no truck support for Saturday night.

We will have a few contributions for prize give-aways on Saturday night. These are our so called sponsors. See image below... Nothing of any great value; just a bit of fun. Judging for prize give aways will be done by the organizing committee.

Sunday
We will take a gravel roads back towards Ottawa/US border at Ogdensburg, NY. Approximately 3 hour ride to the border.

US people will have Monday off work. I am planning on finishing my ride home on Monday...where ever that might take me through NY and VT.

We'll finalize further details as the date approaches, but this should give people more of an idea on what to expect. It will be a fun ride through remote parts of Canada. The routes we will be taking are the makings of the coast to coast Trans Canada Trail that Deadly99 is putting together. So, start thinking about all of that motorcycle-camping gear that you have somewhere or that you will need to buy. This ride is exactly what Adventure Rider is all about: riding to places that we wouldn't otherwise see; self sustained camping on the bike in the back woods; riding with other like-minded fools who should know better.

Thanks to Deadly99 for a lot of the route planning.

There is no *cost* to attend this ride other than the campgrounds, any hotels you book for yourself, your own food and fuel. This is mainly a self sufficient ride with a little bit of guidance on where the route is. Look after yourself...join the fun.

Who's in?

We have to limit this ride to 60 riders due to space at the campsites. As of late March, we have reached that number. We're keeping a list of 'alternatives' so that if anyone on the primary list can't make it, others can join. Just post in this thread if you want to be on the list.

SPOTWALLA: We set up the following page for the "Ontario Ride 2011 Memorial Day"

The direct link is:
http://spotwalla.com/locationViewer.php?id=57

There is a join password to add your Spot to the Location Page - PM Emmbeedee or send an email to emmbeedee(at)gmail.com or if you have a friend who's already a member of that Spotwalla Location page, they can give you the password too.

The password is not a huge security thing - it's just to keep out anyone who might want to see the page for nefarious reasons, like to know when you're not home, etc.

There is also a "view" password on the location page, so it's not viewable by the general public. Those who choose to join the page should understand how to secure their location by employing secure zones in their SpotWalla account, and control the message types that update their location on the location page. A little more information here.

And, yes, there are t-shirts!

T-Shirts are here: http://www.cafepress.ca/GravelTravel

US people- BRING YOUR PASSPORT if you want to get back into the States.

Edited to add TengaiJohn's most updated list and/or link if there are technical difficulties (4-4-11) for easier reference. Will keep updating if it'll help.

TengaiJohn is the official list keeper. Merely providing a service posting it here so it's easier to find.

Original drivel below.

Cool2 Is there a better date to go?

I'm open to suggestions on which weekend to go....or week day? We chose Memorial Day weekend originally because it offers a day off work without using a vacation day. But we can choose...we're adults! Throw out any suggestions. In the end, "I'll decide!" , but let's see what people have to say.

I'm in. I did an awesome 6 day loop of the area in 2001 on snowmobile. Would love to see it in summer.

Pretty much any date is good for me at this point.

Not sure there is in my case as there's rumor of another possible invasion happening a bit later in the season...

There's a little time between now and then. May be able to shuffle things this year. Family tradition, though, so we'll see.

That was at Auberge Du Lac Taureau. It was really nice to have a great meal and comfy accommodation after riding in the dust of Northern Quebec for 3 days. Everyone enjoyed it.

...then she grew up on me.

Fortunately, so far, she'll still come camping with us occasionally.

Let's try to stay on topic here...you in, Kurt?

Thumb Free sandblasting...

Ah.......my centerstand was pristine after that ride. I ain't stayin in that crappy hotel. The meal only had 4 or 5 courses. Un-tollerable
Should have the g/s all set with a motor that needs some miles on it.
Still have my t-shirt for the dam and it's getting worn out so I guess I'll have to go get a new one :) Here we go.......
Happy Wednesday
Jon
