nope, you're an expert.
this was on a trip from Bozeman to Glacier Nat Park, first stop. over 350 miles each way. he rearanged it a little the next morning. totaled that one when a rock punched a hole in the case. probably could have had it welded but he got teh insurance involved and they totaled it. he just picked up an '09 because of Suzuki's promotions right now. paid $4800 out the door 0% financing for 36mo.

Nice report. Just back from Death Valley this past weekend myself. I think you will be happy with a DR. It's like a Swiss Army knife. It can do it all.

Checking out the Lancaster Poppy Reservation

...and tackling real sand for the first time.

A friend invited me to head up to the Lancaster Poppy Reservation. The weather was nice and cool, a bit of clouds, so I met him at the Roxford exit off the 5 freeway.

We headed up the 5, made our way through Santa Clarita on the McBean Parkway and rode the twists of San Francisquito Road to Lancaster. With so much rain this year the hills were a gorgeous emerald green.

We arrived and, alas, we were too early. Best bloom wasn't for a couple more weeks. So I got a quick shot of some flowers and bid Rick, his wife and his heavy, low V-star adieu and hit the dirt across from the Reserve;

This one looks fun:

My little "adventure" bike going where it isn't supposed to:

Random pic

Another;

and another; (you can really see the gorgeous blue sky in the mirror)

Ooh, there's the plant life we came for:

What's up with the sign?

Oh, that's why it's closed:

No problem, I went around and conquered my first deep sand...TRIUMPH! Buried the back tire within less than an inch of my chain. Oh, my kingdom for shaft drive.

Where Elizabeth Lake Rd. meets San Francisquito Road this caught my attention. Apparently it was a drive through coffee shop a few years ago:

A view from another dirt rode off San Francisquito Road, The Leona Divide Fire Rd. Apparently this works it's way all the way over to Bouquet Canyon Road, but I only had time to go a couple of miles up before I had to head home:

Oh yes, I'll definitely be back to The Leona Divide Fire Rd. It's a pretty nice dirt road through pine forests.

More on that later.

Across from the Lancaster Poppy reserve you'll see a bunch of dirt trails.

And the Leona Divide rd that connects San Francisqito and Bouquet.

From SoCal north a good diversion is the Carrizo Plain. The guys in this RR went through and loved it:

It may be a good change of pace from the Highways.

(Carrizo Plain is roughly between Bakersfield and the coast.)

I might do that on the way back. The route up is via Sequoia/Yosemite/Tahoe etc. Thanks!

Leona Divide Fireroad

I came across this wonderful road a few weeks ago by chance during a ride to the Lancaster Poppy Reserve via San Francisquito Road. If you're at all familiar with the area then you know there's three roads kind of paralleling each other up through the Angeles National Forest between route 5 and Lancaster. San Francisquito is the middle one of the three; Lake Hughes Rd, San Francisquito and Bouquet Canyon road.

There are fire roads lacing themselves between the three and this is one of them. We started at Bouquet Canyon and headed west towards San Francisquito.

We stop to take some photos about a half mile in and 800 feet up.

The road behind us

Stopped for a break...

...to look at this;

and then again for this. (by the look of that VW, I think this is a no parking zone)

As we rounded a corner I jammed on the brakes. This hawk was just sitting there on the updraft watching us.

A bit after the 4 mile mark with his a nice long soft sand strip.

We would have gone back down to take some pix of us actually fording it, but just after the sandpit was a steep hill with this, so we weren't in the mood to come back.

We continued on...here's Ben and the Bumble BeeMW catching up.

And up, up, up

And up...

We reach San Francisquito Rd

and press on across the road down the eloquently named Forest Service rd 6n04

Then down FSR 7N02

Over one last Berm and we're done.

More pix later...
