They tell me it's Spring out there, is it true?

Spring has come and I'm getting stir crazy over here finishing this year-long IICE Air build. So let's take a break and talk about the next performance modifications.

Remember this chart below from way back on page 7? As I get some time over the next few days we'll get into the ongoing developments.

A little refresher about the chart. The row and column headers list rider inputs and ECU operational ranges respectively.

The IICE Air operates in the Blue range, and
the IICE Cool operates in the Violet ranges.

There is another Hotrod modification in the works, and it fills in another one of those boxes. We'll get into that, and cover what it does and how it works in the usual detail.

The Pink range is covered by the IICE Smooth

I hear you fellas. I've been down in the shop doing what I can when I can. The weekend was going to see the epoxy processes done. I tried on Saturday afternoon but it was a no go. Today I feel fine, but I don't have the time today. This morning I spent a couple of hours on some of the many other steps. Nothing is standing still around here.

Well of course it works, but you Texas boys are easy.

Seriously though, it's good to talk about what we're doing next, because it helps out with what we're doing now. It's always good to keep the creativity flowing.

We'll be waxing on about the new IICE Smooth for a little while anyway. I sketched out the design and ran simulations on it about 7 years ago, (June '05!) and never did go ahead with it. Imagine what might have happened back then with a little Marketing.

The Smooth is exactly what the BMW bikes have needed. Take a look at pink box on the chart a few posts up ^^^ and you can probably guess that it works on the O2 sensor signal.

So what goes on in that little pink box labeled, 'ECU calculates fuel based on O2 sensor'? Power, that's what goes on in that box! Well not now, but it will when we're done with it.

So are you saying iice smooth before iice cool? If one has smooth do they need air?

As we've discussed the LC-1 from Innovate attacks the Pink box. How will smooth differ?

Good questions.

The different devices work on different parts of the operational envelope. It isn't really a question of whether you need one or the other. Rather, it's that the devices work together. Each improves a range of the operational envelope. They are a matched set you could call it.

Yes the Smooth differs in some ways from the LC-1. Though it is more similar than different.

Before getting into the differences, it seems important to first discuss what the IICE Smooth does, and how it works and so on. And in what way these improvements affect performance and overall user satisfaction with their bike.

I realize that you've installed an LC-1 on your bike and have been experimenting with programming it. And because of that you are familiar with the general concept. The Smooth is a far simpler product, but it works the same. And we'll get into that.

OK...Please Speak Slowly And Explain

It could just be me...but I lost the continuity of this discussion.

Most of us have the IICE Air and we are waiting to purchase the IICE Cool to compliment the Air...

Enter the IICE Smooth ??????

Will the Smooth be the other leg of the trilogy?

Will we have three devices? Each building on the one that preceded it?

I am getting a headache.

We offer several training courses at our IICE offices. ^ ^ ^ See above.

Kidding aside, yes the Smooth is another facet. It does more than the the Cool. That is to say, it covers a larger operational range than the Cool.

The Smooth affects the whole range commonly known as Closed Loop. The Air and Cool together work on ranges that are Open Loop.

There are so many benefits to running slightly richer mixtures on the 1100/1150 motorcycles: no surging, cooler exhaust and cylinder head temperatures, better idle, better acceleration, more mid-band power, cruising at lower RPMs, and the possibility of better left to right power balancing, etc.

It will be really interesting to see what you come up with and how it is installed. It would be great to have something simple that richened the mixture but maintained Closed Loop operation.
